Burns from exhaust
I recently looked at a car that appeared to have had blistered paint above the exhuast
Seemed to be between the vents and the exhaust outlets. Is this common or is there something wrong here.
I looked like nice cooked paint, with blisters.

It is unusual and there is an issue. It could be as simple as a missing heat shield or the results of something worse.

The damage appeared to be directly above the collector, right where it exits the fiberglass. It was straight up from the exhaust, not blowing back, so I am assuming maybe it occurred while not moving? Looked like radiant heat damage to me.
Paint was kinda brownish tinted.

Could have been messing around and running without the side pipes. Maybe at the races?

My car has the exact blistered paint and it was caused by a shop forgetting to turn on the large floor fans while the car was being run on a chassis dyno.  |

I had a problem of blistering paint on a Cobra about 25 years ago, in the same area. I had used a lacquer based filler instead of bondo and the lacquer obviously hadn't cured. Heat from the exhaust caused the filler to blister. Ground the area back to the fiberglass, filled with bondo, problem solved. Fortunately, the paint wasn't metallic.

A friend had that happen when he was first starting up his car. Primary reason he gave: engine running way too lean at first and his not paying attention to all the excess heat.

How far was his exhaust from the body? Some of the ones that I have seen were only 1/4" or closer. Mine were over 1/2" maybe even closter to 3/4". Does not look as good to have that big gap. But I did not worry about the paint burning or blistering.
This is not just on fiberglass cars either. Painted metal cars can/will have the same issue.
