Road Trip!
The Mile Hi Cobra Club is off on another road trip. We're headed to the Black Hills in South Dakota for a couple of days. We're leaving tomorrow morning, and should get back Sunday night. We're staying in Deadwood, and plan to take in the usual sights - Mt Rushmore, the Badlands, Wall, Sturgis, etc.
I'v been there a few times over the years, and really enjoy it. It's beautiful country, and perfect for a roadster. We were last there in 2011 for Kool August Nights in Deadwood. Before that we were there in 2000 for the motorcycle rally in Sturgis.
If you've never been to the Black Hills, you should put it on your Must Do List.

We got home late on Sunday night. We had a wonderful time! Great friends, friendly locals, great roads, and great cars. What a blast we had.
Over the same week end, the national Corvette club was holding a meet in Spearfish, SD. Too bad for them, as we sorta stole their thunder. There were a lot of 'vettes around, but we got all the attention. When a 'vette owner opened his hood, nothing happened. When a Cobra owner opened his hood, it attracted people like flies to honey. Checking the oil took at least 20 minutes.
Anyway, here's a bunch of pictures I took around the black hills.
As you can see, we did manage to hit some rain. On Saturday, the rain was pretty severe. For a while there, visibility was so bad, I could barely see the road. Then it started to hail. Michele took some pictures of that. I'll post some pictures of that later.

On Saturday night, the group decided to leave on Sunday morning at 0700. 0700! You've got to be kidding me! First, I'm not really a Crack-of-Dawn kinda guy, and Michele is not a Crack-of-Dawn kinda Gal. Second, we're on vacation. Third, there's no place to get breakfast before 0700. Third, I'm really not in that big of a rush to get home. Like I said, I'm on vacation.
So, the rest of the gang got up and left early. Michele and I slept in, and awoke well rested and refreshed. We went into Deadwood and had breakfast at this little place. This is the best breakfast we've had all week end. I highly recommend it.
And I had a nice chat with this fellow.
We hit the road about 0900. We decided to follow 385 south. That goes through Custer, SD, and Hot Springs, SD. We came a cross a herd of Buffalo.
We stopped for lunch in a little town in NE. We saw a small sign that said, "Carhenge, 3 1/2 miles". So we went there!
Then we stopped in Syndey, NE, to do a little shopping in Cabellas. Always check out the Bargain Cave. They had plenty of handgun ammo, still at reasonable prices - so I picked up a few hundred rounds. Then we had a delicious steak dinner next door.
We had clear weather all day. A little warm in NE, but not brutal. No rain at all. And the car ran flawlessly all day. We stayed on the two lane black top all the way to Sterling, CO. Then picked up the freeway for the rest of the ride home. We went through Denver around 7 pm, and got home around 9:30pm.

Waiting out the storm in Keystone
A lot of hail and rain for about 2 hours
After leaving Keystone, we managed to find another storn just east of Custer. The rain was so hard, we could barely see the road. I lost sight of the car in front of me. I could see the road, and I could see the yellow line to the left and the white line to the right. I could also see the SUV's who pulled off to the side to wait it out. Wimps.
When it started to hail on us, all I could do is laugh.

Bob,
That was a fantastic trip and the pictures are really great. I really like the ones of the tunnels through the rock. That is one of the places I never got to see when I was working and traveling a lot. Thanks for posting the pictures.
