Default Alternator belt screeching

I changed my alternator last year to a 350 amp single wire unit and I have noticed that if my temp goes to 200 degrees or more despite that my fans immediately kick on the belt of my alt screeches.

Not until it goes down to 180 degrees it quiets down. I used belt dressing but I was told that it could be too aggressive that the belt can come off.

My belt has the inner teeth and fits perfectly in the pulley. Any thoughts?
Sincerely
Lou

Check that the alt pulley is in perfect alignment with the crank and water pump pullies. Look at the sides of belt for wear marks.
Also that you can deflect the belt 1/2" in the middle of two pullies. Don't use dressings.

Agree with ERA Chas. A new belt may be in order.

I have used belt dressing in the past and found that it collects dirt and actually may make the belt squeal. I think a clean belt/pulleys is the way to go.

I bad a solar pro lem when I switched to.a.different salt. The alignment was off about 1/4 inch. Any load caused a god awful squeal. Check the alignment and .make sure it's tight.

Nah just want to make sure I have enough power to crank the engine when the fans are going and still have power left over.

Dan, isn't it a ***** when you wake up with a bad hangover and try to write a sensible sentence? I know, I also have that problem.

Thanks guys,
this is a new belt and the alignment is good, this only happens when the temp reaches 200 degrees, then the fans kick on and eventually the squealing goes away, drives me nuts

This may sound obvious, but are you sure the belt is tight enough. Mine screeched until I tightened it a little.

Default slipping belt

Dont waste your money on belt dressing use the paste style tooth paste

it sounds like the belt has polished the pullies and the tooth paste has just enough grit to take the polish off

YUp I double checked it and it is very tight. Someone suggested that the chrome pulley might be the issue.

Yes as in crest or colgate

It takes less paste than what you put on your tooth brush every morning

I can't it is part of the new alternator and the old alternator's pulley is not interchangeable. I need to find another solution with what I have.

If tooth paste helps why won't lapping compound work even better to roughen up the pulley groove? Sounds like the chrome is what the issue is. But WTFDIK?

350 amps? My Peterbilt has a 160 amp alternator to charge four 1000 cca batteries and runs all lights AC and stereo. I think you went way too big. JMHO. Tom
