Default Engine and Engine Builders

I'm thinking of getting either a crate engine or at least a long block to re-place the 351w already in my Cobra. I already have 350 hp but would like a bit more, say between 450 and 500+. The car is a weekend driver so I'm looking at anything too radical and something always dependable and trouble freee. Maybe a 351w stoked to 408??? I"d appreciate any input or suggestions.

Also, has anyone used Pro-formance Unlimited out of NJ?? I like what they have to offer but I'm in Calif so I'm not too sure about using someone so far away should a problem arise. Any info on these guys, good or bad would be appreciated

One last question. Has anyone bought a crate engine and then had problems? If so, how are they resolved? Obviously, this would be important to know if I go with someone out of state.

Thanks in advance for you input.

Greg

I'm in the engine stage right now and am finding that it's cheaper to buy a short block than it is to build one using my existing block. Labor and machining costs are terribly high. I've exchanged a couple emails with Keith Craft, who has just about exactly what I want (418W) for less than $3500. So you might talk to him and see what he has.
Also Brent Blykins here on Club Cobra is an engine builder and really knows his stuff. He's another one to talk to. 408 is a great engine and doesn't have to be radical at all.

Default California Engine Buider

You should check out Arron Johnson at Badass Cars. He is a phenomenal builder. Check his site at Bad-Ass Racing Engines - custom street and race engines.

You should consider Tom Lucas at FE Specialties in Citrus Heights(Sacto). He just built a 427 Windsor for my new Daytona Coupe that you can check out in my album. 611 hp.
Great guy, excellent work, 30+ years building performance engines. Well known among NorCal Cobra members. Has built motors for very high dollar builds..anything from mild 351's to fire breathing twin supercharged big blocks.
Here's his shop number: 916 339-0427 Check out FE Specialties website too.

There are several good builders and a lot more not so good. The builders on this forum do a great job and stand behind their work.

I use Kuntz & Company (outstanding builder).

I currently have a 392 that was originally rated at 430HP. I got tired of it pretty quick and then put some different heads on it. Last time I checked it was making about 410-425 RWHP depending on the dyno.
I am now like you, looking at doing a repower this winter. I think this time I am going to shoot for 600HP with a 427W or 438W Dart Block engine. I think if you are going to do it, then put something big in there. Cheaper now than later.
I have not contacted anyone yet, but I have been looking at Keith Craft and also following Brent Lykins (B2 Motorsports) engine build posts a lot lately.
