How many guys run Bill Board Tires here or that you know. Who has had issues?
How many guys here run Bill Boards?
How many do you know that have had issues with them blowing other than Bernica as noted in the other thread.
Wondering if this is just a freak occurrence or whether it happens more often and we just don't hear about it.

I installed the first set in about 2006. By 2012 the sidewall cracks were more than obvious. 85% of the original tread was still there, but those sidewalls were causing me concern.
I replaced the first set with another set of GY BB's in August 2012. These tires already exhibit small sidewall cracks.
I had this new set mounted in August 2012 and drove the car maybe 500 miles until dry docking it in early November 2012. I began driving it this year in May, and to date have driven approx. 1,200+ miles.
I won't keep this set on the car as long as the first set. This will probably be my last Goodyears. Avons are next on the list.

I posted the previous thread about my tires to just make everyone aware of an issue I have heard about more than once. I want to be clear that I was not bashing the GY BB's. We all love the look and I loved the way they performed when they were new.
I believe that they are a "purpose built" tire and not intended to be sitting around. I guess we all wish that GY would come up with a DOT version with more shelf life and the same look. But until then, the Avons get the nod.
Now, off to work on breaking the news to my dear and understanding wife!

I have a friend who has mentioned to me more than once that he can't get them to balance. And I've heard that before, also.
My experience was positive with BBs but I'm running Avons now.

Evan,
For those running the tires, they have to eventually realize they were never meant for true street driving. They were produced for the track, and for use at one, maybe two events tops before they were considered junk. Rick Muck has already posted on the other thread that there are no preservatives in the mix for those tires, as such they hold a limited shelf live at best. Do I know others who have experienced such blowouts, yes, most of them while the cars were loaded in their trailers, or had sat for months at a time in their garages over the winter.
If you are contemplating a new set of tires for your car, the AVON's are the best for the street at this time.
Bill S.

Cruise ships are generally safe too, but only if you ignore minor issues such as food safety, fire hazards, lack of employee training and ship maintenance, and ship captains that abandon ship before his crew and passengers.
I know Avons are expensive, but you get what you pay for.

Can someone post pics of a Cobra with the Avons?
Also is there a stencil made by anyone for the Goodyear lettering? That might be a popular item.
How would you spray the white on? Would it be a rubber or paint????
Hmmm

Evan,
Avons don't have the look (even with the GY stencil) but they do deliver the goods

Two ways to do it:
1: White Tire Paint
2: Glue on letters

.....but I'm guessing that a Cobra has a better power to weight ratio than a cruise ship....
Cheers,

I haven't had any issues with the Billboards on either car
I just took off the wheels and tires on the 1965 because I think the billboards were 20+ years old and the wheels were the original Magnesium ones. I kept thinking that every time that I drove the car, that the tires or wheels were going to explode, but they never did
I went with a new set of wheels and Billboards

A picture? How about a bunch of pictures in another thread...
Avon tires... why did everybody keep it a secret (just kidding)?
Or if it is too much trouble to click on the above link, here's a sample picture.

GPete: Thanks mucho. I will take you up on your kind offer!! I will pm my info.
Tuto: Car look fantastic. Love the look.
Question..what is the history of Avon tires? Do they have any historical connection to the Cobra?
I checked my Bill Boards this week. No cracks at all. I try to run the car every weekend though to keep everything circulating. The worst thing for a car is to let it sit. Even if I put 20-30 miles on a weekend just to keep things flowing. The only time it sits is from approximately Decmeber to April due to the winter. First salting is the end until spring and a few rains.
My BB are about 6-7 years old and show no cracking at all but Bernica's little story has me a little concerned now. However, in reading his post again he saw the cracks but didn't change the tires and let them continue to sit. Berni, seems to me you should have changed them out at first sign of cracking. I would have changed them immediately.
I'm thinking of putting on Avons in the spring and stenciling the BB letters on with white tire paint. Seems like a plan.
What do you guys think????
Thanks.
