Poll Results could also mean that one person had problems and eight of their acquaintances also responded.

So is windshield glass meeting AS1 DOT standards, seat belt certification, etc. NHTSA sets standards of performance i.e. braking distance, interior materials flammability, crash standards and so on.

Most of the parts you purchase to build a replica are DOT approved. If you got brake hoses at the auto parts store they are approved. If you used DOT brake fluid, ditto. Sealed beam headlamps, ditto again.

Many people confuse DOT with NHTSA, they are not the same.
Yes..but NHSTA is an agency of the DOT. While many components in Cobras and replicas are DOT compliant many are not ie. your windshields, visors, many seat belts etc..not one of these cars would meet NHSTA safety standards and thus be DOT approved.

I have the BB's as stated in another thread. I queried RK just to see what their take is on the issue of 'cracking'....which seems to be the main concern. Below is their reply. BTW...I use a product, not Armor All, but one that actually brings out the sidewall look a bit sharper and cleaner. The 'patina' look is still the main look but the product seems to protect the sidewalls a little better.

I just think it fair to be sure everyone knows the options. I was one of the early proponents of getting the Avons here and was working with a guy in SF to make that happen. I just let it take it's own path ...figuring it would catch on easily. I was ready to order them but didn't like the flat look of the sidewalls. That is me!
I went to these BB's about 3 months ago and have had the time of my life in performance...not to mention look! But I would NOT sacrifice look for safety, Never!. I guess I could worry about the 'insurance' issues should an accident occur. Most likely I wouldn't be around to negotiate if a crash did happen....but that's a different story. I have heard other opinions on the subject...like other cars with non DOT items like tinted windows, etc. But I digress.

"About cracking, yes – Armor all or other similar products will help. The cracking is not dangerous until the cracks expand “deep” and allow oxygen to attack the cords, this usually take five plus years. Your process has definitely Helped."

"These Billboards have less than 500 miles, but have been sitting on the car for a few years. I posted before about my concerns about the sidewall cracking. Then, last night...WHOOSH! There goes one. Then an hour later...WHOOSH! There goes another!"

Hummm....I think the answer is somewhere in this verbiage. I happen to live in the same area as Bernica. I think a 'race' tire is pretty safe considering it has to be driven at brutal speeds and worked hard....hence the word...RACE. But to drive other than racing should allow the tire to be used longer and as safe, I would think. But, maybe I am missing something. However, leaving a tire on the car, not using them and sitting for extended periods of time.....isn't that something like leaving a nice Cashmere sweater in the closet and being surprised it has holes from the moths? Just sayin....................

No, they would be DOT approved but NOT NHTSA approved. Big difference. And they are ALL departments of the US Government so NONE of them are "Government" approved.

Beware.......Obama is watching...............

Yeah yeah the Obama stuff. Big difference with this, our Hot Rods that are shaped like a Cobra in our home states have been certified to be street legal through, "specialty build- home build- limited production built- show only-antiques- or what ever ,but they are registered, insured and legal for the street. Goodyear BBs no matter what you do are NOT LEGAL FOR THE STREET! And if you are involved in an accident and the cops or insurance investigator is sharp you will get your ass handed to you. Your insurance may be voided you will loose everything, and regardless if you are killed in the crash your estate will loose, because of your " willful disregard". All because you want the right look for your Cobra.

That's a great tech article Bill posted about 303. Perfect explanation.
I have used it for two decades on tires and on my street cars, all black trim pieces.
Especially effective on the trim at base of windshields, black rocker panels and bumper top trim on station wagons. The key is removing the excess. It does work. The only area I have found in conflict with their explanation is that it will wash-down and streak when rained on or washed. But it does protect and keep things fresh-looking and pliable.

And I was going to slather my BBs down with petroleum jelly and wrap them up in shrink wrap. Now I will order some 303 as well!

Maybe for a little while when it's hot out, but mine have stopped.

I have driven in medium rain without issues, but haven't really pushed the car much in the rain.

The Avons are a little slippery when pavement temps start to drop.

I've had mine for about 13,000 miles; they still look pretty good!

Nowhere near as much as BB's.

I have not had any problems with BB's, but I followed recs here and elsewhere, and got a set of Avons from Nick Acton. I mounted them on different wheels, as well (FIA replicas vs. Halibrand replicas). The ride is "day and night" different. It is smoother, way smoother, and they look just as fine (IMO). Very grippy as well. Worth every penny.
