The long-awaited new CSX 9000 series Shelby Cobra Daytona Coupe Mk II with a number of improvements, upgrades and new features arrived in the USA in 2009. The new model was allocated CSX9000 series chassis numbers and come complete with a Shelby-issued MSO certificate and Chassis tag.
“The new CSX 9000 Shelby Cobra Daytona Coupe replaced the SPF Daytona Coupe and this famous marque will in future only be marketed as a Shelby product”, says Lance Stander, President of Shelby Distribution USA of Irvine, CA.
The new models are available with a fiber glass body or aluminum-body.
“Every CSX 9000 series Shelby Cobra Daytona Coupe will be listed in the Shelby World Registry, making this new addition to Carroll Shelby’s stable of sports cars a collector’s dream. The new Coupe will feature Shelby signature door handles and seat covers, and the stopping power for the powerful Coupe will be provided by Shelby branded brakes”.
Asked how the Coupe had progressed from a Shelby-approved replica of the original World famous Shelby Cobra Daytona CSX2000 series Coupe, that in 1965 won the World Manufacturers Championship to a full blooded new model range, Stander said market requirements had demanded that the new model be upgraded and improved in a manner that would make it worthy of the Shelby appellate.
“A sports car with the heritage and image of the Coupe begged for improvements and new features to make it a worthy contender in the market in which it already is one of the most sought after contenders. This awareness led to the development of the CSX 9000 series”.
In order to increase the clearance between the driver’s head and the roof as well as between the driver’s left hand and the A-post, the seats were repositioned and the steering wheel moved over to the right. This created a much more comfortable seating environment.
New external door handles do not mar the sleek look of the coachwork and facilitates entry without the use of a remote key, and the doors are fitted with electric windows.
The side air intakes behind the doors now form part of the rear panel behind the B-pillars with an added quarter vent style window. In addition to improved interior air flow, visibility has been significantly improved.
Gear heads will be delighted with the improved front and rear independent suspension. This development includes the replacement of the rose joints with ball joints, and the new design facilitates the adjustment of camber, caster and toe adjustment up front, as well as easy camber and toe adjustment at the rear.
To eliminate noise, the front and rear anti-roll bars have been redesigned, the chassis has been stiffened and a new fuel tank with internal baffles incorporates a swirl pot design.

To improve oil cooling the oil cooler has been separated from the radiator and fitted in an area with adequate air flow, the radiator core diameter has been increased and more efficient radiator fans are fitted.
“With the high ambient temperature in most of the USA in summer, and the congestion on our roads, adequate engine and oil cooling are “must haves” in an auto that is as comfortable cruising along at 20 mph or when hugging the corners at well over a 100 mph!”
In keeping with modern design, the heater and climate controls for the air-conditioning have no cables and are operated via servo units, the side muffler pipes have been increased in diameter to ensure a deeper rumble, and the wheel wells have been adapted to accommodate 18 inch, deep dish Shelby Cobra style rims.
“Although the new Coupe shares all the visual magic of the original, the new CSX 9000 series is just so much more sophisticated and will have enormous appeal in the market for full-blooded American retro-styled sports cars.
The first two new Shelby Cobra Daytona Coupes have already been delivered, the order book is filling up fast and Shelby dealers are now taking orders for later deliveries. Production will initially be limited to 2 units per month.
The MSRP of the fiber glass bodied CSX 9000 is $89,900.00 TKM and the aluminum-bodied model will be offered at $195,900.00 TKM. Orders can be placed by following this lead to the Shelby dealers’ website.

The Coupe was originally referred to as the “Daytona Car” while this closed body Cobra was being prepared to compete in that legendary Florida endurance race. Eventually that name morphed into "Daytona Coupe." Designed by Peter Brock while working for Carroll Shelby, just six Daytona Coupes were built originally. Even so, the Daytona Coupe became one of the most accomplished sports cars of all time. The Daytona Coupe was the first and only American made car to ever win the World Manufacturer’s Championship for Grand Touring race cars, and in the process it transformed American road racing. The Daytona Coupe went on to set 23 International USAC/FIA records during the Sebring 12 hour endurance race. One of those records was running the Coupe at an amazing 150+ mph for 12 straight hours.
Working with original Daytona designer, Peter Brock, a street version of the 1965 Daytona Coupe that won the World Manufacturers Championship was envisioned. Before long, the Shelby CSX 9000 Coupe became a reality, featuring sleek lines and a contoured body that was slightly larger than the original race car. The CSX 9000 also performs at least as well as the originals. The Shelby CSX 9000 upholds the Shelby legacy and features a genuine Shelby series chassis number making it eligible for listing in the Shelby World registry. Each CSX 9000 also comes with a Shelby-issued MSO certificate and chassis tag.

The Coupe features Shelby signature door handles and seat covers, and the stopping power for the powerful Coupe are provided by Shelby branded brakes. The seats and steering wheel placement have been rethought in the roomier cabin to make it much more usable than the originals. Electric windows have been fitted and the side air intakes behind the doors now form part of the rear panel behind the B-pillars with an added quarter vent style window aiding visibility. In keeping with modern design, the heater and climate controls for the air-conditioning are operated via servo units, the side muffler pipes have been increased in diameter to ensure a deeper rumble, and the wheel wells have been adapted to accommodate 18” Shelby Cobra rims.
Drivers will be delighted with the improved front and rear independent suspension. The CSX 9000 suspension now features ball joints that facilitate the adjustment of camber, caster and toe settings up front, as well as easy camber and toe adjustment at the rear. To reduce noise and improve handling, the front and rear anti-roll bars have been redesigned and the chassis has been stiffened. The fuel tank with internal baffles incorporates a swirl pot design. The oil cooler has been separated from the radiator and fitted in an area with better air flow, the radiator core diameter has been increased and more efficient radiator fans were fitted.
The new CSX 9000 series Shelby Cobra Daytona Coupe shares all the visual magic of the original, but is much more sophisticated. This thoroughly modern sports car tugs at the heartstrings of anyone in the market for a full-blooded American retro-styled collector sports car.

Just wondering about the "modern" improvements. Anything that the Brock Coupe featured on Leno has that you would like on this one or the reverse...tech on this one that you would like to see on that Daytona?

It looks sweet but that color......

Is this your car?

I think the lines on this are much better than with the added flares of the Brock Coupe.

The yellow car is my SOLBRA which I built from a 2009 Pontiac Solstice, & it runs well & all the maintenance is on GM.

Did the pipes come wrapped that way when the car was delivered?

As the Primary builder of the Leno reviewed car, the car shown above is a general CSX 9000 build and is owned by a friend of ours in Florida.

the 9000 car as seen has the stock bodywork, there are no added flares or flaring.

all flares and flaring are custom appointments based on owner wants/needs at time of build in the USA after South Africa has delivered the chassis.

the exhaust wrapping is to owner taste, we generally dont need to go to this extent on our builds, but maybe the owner wanted more wrapping.

we usually pull the carpet and foot-boxes and insulate them with material on the inside and insert a stainless firewall with heat shielding behind . -- that way--- leave the pipes be.

--This is in concert with proper engine tuning. --EGTs should *NOT* need that wrapping.

on the suspension, they have changed things a bit and the Series 1 Car ; SPC 0006 to SPC 0154 had one suspension system, and the 9000 series had a system that used more ball joints vs heims, and allowed the use of a deep-dish wheel.

there are hundreds and hundreds of details between the cars that are different.
