did the originals have stripes
I don't think I have seen any of the originals factory with stripes?
|
Hello,
The one I saw in "66 was solid red with no roll bar. |
"I think Shelby striped most of his Cobras raced by his team using his team colors. Cobras raced by other teams were probably a mixed bag."
Edit - I was wrong, wrong, wrong... I finished reading the book "Go Like Hell" a few weeks ago and the Ford Lemans Campaign was fresh on my mind and most of Shelby's team cars were painted in team colors which included stripes. But, I'm currently reading John Morris' "Inside Shelby American" and as soon as I opened it up last night, I realized that was wrong, wrong, wrong. Most of the Shelby 289 Cobra team cars were solid colors with just meatballs. A couple had oddball stripes like campaign stripes across the front. |
The first cobra I ever saw was in the early 70's going down the main street where I grew up and it was blue with two while stripes. I was about 14 then and knew that I wanted to own one.

NO they did not.

Yes, but it depends on what car(s) you're inquiring about. 2142 was white with two blue stripes running front to back since birth. Shelby American team colors were Guardsman Blue with White Le Mans stripes. Check out the Daytona's.
CSX3002 was Guardsman Blue with White stripes since it's first paint job. 3008, 3010 and 3031 were all blue with white stripes. So yes, some did but pretty rare. Larry |
thanks thats what i thought mine has them but im torn if i want to keep them i kind of thought they were more a mustang thing from 65 to 68 thanks guys.

I had heard years ago that they put stripes on some of the to help the spotter see what the car was doing in the corners more easily. Probably should be posted in "myths and legends".....

Very early cars NO stripes at all at the races....

From FFR FAQ courtesy of ERA, link shows the stripe spec ERA uses but is quick to point out -
"... as for authentic real Roadsters did not come with stripes they were added on later at dealers or by the buyers, but they were not delivered with stripes ..." Painting Stripes, FFR FAQ |
That's not exactly correct when referring to the coil spring cars.
From the registry " All Competition and S/C models were delivered unpainted from AC Cars and were painted at Shelby American per customer order". So I guess it kind of depends on where you consider "delivered" to be. Larry |
Csx2434
|
Not to change the subject but 2434 was restored by Kirkham. I wonder if it was used as the model for their 289 car.

CSX-3020 came from the factory with stripes. It was ordered by Tom Payne, he raced the car for a year or two like that. Shelby American charged $100 for the stripes

Csx3301
In 2001 CSX3301 was completely restored by HRE Motors in Freeport, NY, who returned it to its original White with Blue stripes.
