Default Replacement coil springs for the Mustang II front end

Hi Guys,

Everett Morrison's directions for modifying the front coil springs from a Mustang II front end were to cut several of the coils off and use the spring. Unfortunately, this leaves the end portion of the remaining spring that I am to use not being able to sit properly on the lower control arm. It looks like it could just pop out of the spring perch on the lower control arm.

Is there an aftermarket spring manufacturer that makes a replacement spring with the correct geometry for the Mustang II front end that would mate better with the factory control arms and would be the correct length for my Cobra?

EM's directions were to cut a certain amount of coils off depending on the engine size and the ride height you wanted. Seems a little ancient to me.

measure the length of the spring and the coil diameter. Then check with Speedway to see if you can find a spring to match. I have a spring tester so I can measure the spring rate which helps in picking the correct spring.
I use a 375# spring in the front. Not to soft or to hard.

They list 22 spring in the 375 lb rate for under $100 pair.
There is a lot to springs on a Cobra not like buying a replacement fuel pump especially if you can a cut down spring to start with.
Dwight

hope this helps

while i'm not fully versed on the components of an EM.
if your doing suspension work and the car uses factory stamped steel mustang II arms and springs, you may want to look into upgrading to aftermarket tubular upper and lower arms that use coilovers. if your suspension is over 20 years old i'm sure some of the bushings have also seen better days.
i did exactly this to my car, and installed an upper and lower kit with coilovers from Heidt's suspension. i also upgraded the brakes while i was at it too......was a great decision, made the car feel so much better on the road.

Changing to the tubular A arms is a consideration for sure. My car is about to hit the road for the first time and I am more concerned about it being safe to drive. I plan to drive it for a month or so before I do the paint in case I need to make any changes.

The wheels on the front are a bit to wide and I read about tubular A arms that were 1" narrower, which would help my wheel issue. Any thoughts on those?

I may just get a new pair of springs as suggested by Dwight so I do not drive on these cut down springs.

Are spring cushions needed for the top and is there some kind of cushion for the bottom of the spring?

Thanks guys, Martin
