I can say that my 289 project was very costly...............
1) Accurate and correct 289 parts are just more....
Washer nozzles for example..... $$$$
2) Uprights for a leaf spring car.... In top dollar category
3) Webers vs Carb
4) Magnesium race wheels ....$$$$$
5) 289 specific parts are less reproduced thus, you know

The ERA FIA kit is actually cheaper than their 427. (Simpler interior and trim)

The answer is totally based on opinion and personal preference. I like the original 289 body best as I like classic British sports cars. I bought a 427 model because there wasn't a 289 out there that l liked (accurate reproduction), though I did find one later. (I have both)
Like Jeff points out, 289 stuff is much harder to find and much more expensive when you do. I've been collecting those parts for about 4 to 5 years now. If originality isn't your thing, it can be much cheaper.
Either way though, it all boils down to which you like better. You're the only one you have to please.
Larry

Don't want to sound prejudice, but the body of the West Coast Cobra (AKA King Cobra) is 6" longer and 4" wider, making this car very stable and a very comfortable ride. Here are a couple of pictures of mine
Basque 1
PS
This is a 427 S/O engine

Big Block all the way
In my opinion the 427 Big Block car takes the prize, Bill's red HiTech has the look!

I'm with this guy. What a beautiful car! That Bill guy has great taste. The 427 S/C does it for me.

It is all a matter of personal preference. To me .. the 289 IS the Cobra. Period. The 427 was a hot rod after thought that stemmed from I believe Kenny Miles looking at a 427 sitting on the floor of the shop (that was being used in some other project) and said "wonder what would happen if we put THAT in a Cobra?". That photo above of the navy blue street cobra is spectacular. Use some frequent flyer miles and visit ERA in Ct., and check out their assembly shop. They normally have 10-12 cars in the assembly process there. They sell a lot of painted rollers and usually have a couple of 289's along with some 427's on the floor. To me it's a toss-up between a really nice street 289 and an FIA, then the 427. I have a solid navy blue ERA 289 FIA, with saddle leather seats. It is a very nice car.

The question is which version of each, is the most beautiful. Each rendering of the car had it's own personality. The little sporty slabside with too much motor, over too little tire? The FIA with Webers, funky roll bar & racing stripes over menacing curves? Stripped down street version of the 427 that would be great for a date(if she was dressed appropriately...)but, ready to tame any pesky Vettes who may be feeling a little to big for their britches? Or a full blown Comp 427 car with that nasty idle & vicious look? Me? I'll take one of each!
& there are other versions, not so easy to come by, that are just as tempting...

I'm not sure "nicest" is a positive thing. Once a girl says you're the "nicest" guy you are not getting any. I don't want my car to look nice, lol.

I'm still left scratching my head on this one
I could be wrong, but surely the cost of an FE S/O build (vs a 289 or variant) probably out weigh the sum total of the aforementioned. No?
Either way... I'm with SunDude... you can't lose
