Default Mickey Thompson ET Street Radial...

I am thinking of putting these (15 inch) on the rear of my Cobra to get better traction (currently have the awful BFGs).

Is anyone currently using these or used them in the past? What is the general consensus on these? Good? Bad? Okay?

They seem to sell in the $240 range each. Is there anything better in that range? Also, since the MT ET Street Radial is for drive tires only, what do you run on the fronts?!? I would prefer my tires to match...

Thanks!

Mickey Thompson S/R tires. Do a search. We have customers who are very happy with them. And yes, the BFGs suck big time! The T/As were state of the art.....in 1974!!!! I will never understand why people will spend extra big bucks to add horsepower but not spend some to make it useable?

And the MT "S/T' tires are not bad at all for the price. Several times better than BFG T/As and a big improvement over Goodyear GT IIs.

So you are saying to run the ET's on the rear and the S/Rs on the front then?

Do they match-up nicely? Can the be placed with a flat black wall on the outside so you can paint billboards on them?

No,

Run S/R's all around for balance. The "ET" tires are drag radials and while DOT and "street legal" are not really intended for everyday driving. S/R's have NO white letters.

The sidewalls are smooth enough to be anything you want them to be. You can stencil them with "Leadfoot Balloon" if it floats your boat.

I know there are a few owners that have ET Drag Radials on front and rear as I have done a search some time back and recall a few of their responses. I remember they were quite surprised and pleased with the handling. Just do not drive on wet pavement. I'm not a fan of taller rims and shorter sidewalls nor mismatched tires. I prefer the 15" look. I'll be watching this thread as I too have considered the ET drag radial front and rear. I really do not drive much through the twisties and consider myself more of a straight-line person. I would really like to feel the pull of the motor instead of burning rubber. Of course we may be talking possible drive train failures.

I've run 325.50.15 ETs on the back of my car for years and really like them. Get them hot, and they really hook up at the strip and they've given satisfactory performance on the street. As mentioned...not so good on wet pavement and the time I got caught in snowy conditions, the car literally would not move up a very minor grade. I just bought another pair a month ago from Summit since they didn't charge any S&H like Jegs wanted for oversized items.

I run the ETs the rear of my car and I'll get another pair when I wear them out. I don't track my car, but they do great in "spirited" driving on crooked roads. They grip quite well on wet pavement but can't handle standing water.
They certainly eliminated the "homicidal" tendencies the car had with the BFGs.
If you're into burnouts you probably won't like them. You'll do wheelstands instead.

I use the ET's on all 4 corners. I am very pleased with the ride and performance on the street. They have an intimidating look too. I did not want to mix tires and tread either front to back. I used them to replace the Goodyear BB's which I did not like, and the difference was like driving a new car. I have not been to a track so my experience is limited to spirited street driving. It takes effort to make them spin. Sticky. I would like to try the ST's next, not a fan of the flame tread of the SR's.

So using the ET's on all four corners doesn't cause any issues then?

What are the pros and cons of the ETs versus the S/Rs?

Our Cobras are a pretty light vehicle compared to a lot of other cars that would use the same tires and sizes, so what may me too soft a sidewall for a Mustang to handle the twisteys isn't too soft for the Cobra which is probably 1000 or more pounds lighter overall. So in my case the ET's work fine on the front. Like I said earlier the Goodyear BB's were terrible tire on my car but others would disagree. I really liked the improvement switching to the ET, from a bias ply tire to a radial. My next move will be to the ST , a true street tire to compare the stiffer sidewall and see how the handling changes. I have no interest in the SR although I have heard good things said about their performance.

I have a set of SR's in storage, they were ok but I didn't really like them. They didn't do so well in the corners for me. I then went to Hoosier billboards which griped great but didn't balance well. In the end they wern't right for me either, and they; like goodyear bilboards & G-7's are not DOT approved. I like the looks of the ET radials & the fact that some above, like them all the way around for strip use & corners as well. Even with some road dampness. With the lighter AC weight; they may make good all around use. In the twisties, they mabe as good as the SR's or S/T's. In the end I went with the S/T's. While I only have about 400 miles on them. I am quite pleased with them, for comfort & overall handling. Performing a laymen's ck of the rubber compund of both SR's & S/T's I think the S/T's are softer. But that could be because the SR's have 4000+ mi. & the S/T's have 400+ miles. IMO the S/T's perform much better overall of the two. I will know for sure when the S/T's have 4000+ miles. If they make it that far! The S/T's are also only rated for about 110+ mph for 1 hour. But for quick romps up to 140/150 mph or some simi hard twisties they perform great. So far! I'll report back after 1000 mi. or so.

Thanks Silversmith,
I am not the original poster but I appreciate the review on the ST"s vs the SR's. That is the direction I am leaning. Choices for 15" tires is limited. God bless Mickey Thompson!

Good review. Here was another interesting thread on the S/T Tires: Great Cobra Tires
