With assistance from Ford and AC Cars, the team at Shelby American modified the existing AC chassis design to accommodate the big block engine. The completed design was called the mark III chassis was manufactured with larger and wider spaced chassis rails. Shelby ordered 100 of these from AC Cars.
Due to the weight of the engine the brakes and suspension were also upgraded. The body was featured prominent wheel arches to fit wider magnesium wheels and tires. Competition features included an oil cooler, side exhausts, large fuel filler, 42-gallon fuel tank, front jacking points and a roll bar.

I think the earlier 289 FIAs also had sidepipes but I'm not sure. |
I believe NYG wants to know when did sidepipes become popular on Cobra replicas, although NYG guy wants to call them "hot rods shaped like Cobras."
ERA started their business in 1981 and there were others like Arntz who may started a bit earlier than that, but roughly 1980 +/-. Sidepipes were popular at the beginning of the Cobra replica industry.

If you don't like the look or burns of the sidepipes, but you like the "stereo" effect you get from sitting between the exhaust pipes, you could go this route. It's custom built headers and 3" pipes out the side.

I like that idea. I've envisioned my SPF without the side exhaust, and a mild cam, just making it simpler. I would probably drive it more often, and maybe enjoy it more. j/s...

Under carriage exhuast
Really like the original looking underside exhuast! Please post photos on a lift for all of us to check out. I have a kirham "427" and a "289" slabside. Would like to place undercarrage exhuast under the "289" and would like some guidance. Thanks, michael

Thanks to all for quality feedback and an entertaining thread to boot.
I received an email from Superformance that the car I listed in the #1 post has been sold. 3-4 months to get a new one.
It was a roller with no engine set up for a 5.0 coyote. I would do a sbf 351W instead. I love the clean lines on the car and the black wheels look good as well.
I prefer 15's for the traditional look as well.

Could be, I use to live in San Jose too. Although Royce doesn't ring any bells and neither does Gloria (I quick scanned some posts). Doesn't mean we haven't met, please do say hi next time you think I'm the guy. I remember talking to a fireman several years ago, you guys have a lock on the retirement thing, beats the hell out of what my company offered me lol. It's all good, keep the shiny side up |

Over the years I have seen a lot of cars with side pipes some of them looked ridiculous especially those that had them just for looks where the inlets were not connected and oh so obvious.
Don't forget that the real look included belly exhaust on a Cobra and with a real 427. |

Under body exhaust
Hi, I will have under body exhaust but I will also put on the side pipes, unused and just for show. Made of 4" stainless and polished, looks absolutely fantastic. If you do this then it makes the car look more like the original. If you want to try the look get a piece of pipe, (pvc down down pipe will do) and hold it along the side of your car. Use your imagination and then make he decision. If you do go with the side pipes then have under body pipes finish before they come out the back of the car, this way you would not see them, it's abetter look.

The side pipes are what makes the cobra. In your face looks and sound. I cant imagine the sound even being close to the same. If your worried about people burning there legs just remind them every time they get in and out. That's what I do with my wife. It's almost automatic now.

Interesting thread, does anyone have pictures of the underside with under car exhaust? Curious about the size & shape of the pipes, how were routed and what muffler fits.
Right now I'm thinking about getting a build started in the fall/winter and I always liked the profile of the car without side pipes. Just my personal taste.
