Default Correct Cobra Steering wheel center cap?

I know I should know this, but what is the correct steering wheel Center cap emblem for a 427 Cobra. Does it vary by year? I have seen the AC cap, the black and silver Cobra snake cap and the Red white and blue cap. My Superformance currently has the AC cap that I put on a year ago. Just curious.

Thanks!

JB

I believe that from 3100 on up to ? where red, white and blue, perhaps even from like 3004 or so. I think it might have changed at 3300, to silver and black.

But don't swear by me, my chemo brain is in full bloom tonight, most memory cells are fried tonight.

So no 427 Cobras had the AC badge. And based on your info only a few of the first big blocks had red white and blue badges?

I think for the most part, that's true. "AC" was used on the leaf spring cars. I think the early 427's (not comp or S/C) used a black/silver Cobra emblem and later red/white/blue. I might have that backwards though.
I don't think the comp models and therefore the S/C models had a center cap. Rather a washer and screws. Keep in mind that all of those models may be different today though.

You got my curiosity up so I started looking through one of my Cobra books which has several pictures of original S/C's. There is a mixture of the silver & black emblems as well as the red, white & blue emblems and they seem to be scattered throughout the CSX numbers. For instance, CSX3021 - black & silver, CSX3025 & CSX3275 - red, white & blue. I only see the A/C emblem on one 427 car but it had European license plates, so possibly a COB/COX car. All other A/C emblems were on the 289 cars.

Well, I guess that should make it all crystal clear for you

I seem to remember that one of Colin Comer's books showed a large number of photos with the AC cap. But when this came up a few months ago I went to some of the Cobra registery photo sites and most of them did show the Cobra emblem on the steering wheel - probably 90%+ that I looked at. So, I guess I'm as confused as anyone.

I liked the AC cap on a black car so I went with it. I guess it would be easy to buy both and switch them out now and then.

I went with the RWB Cobra one, just because I like it. The car is a fake, I can do what I want and not be too hung up on correctness.

I don't know what CSX-3116 has now. However; back in the day when I was cruzing/screamming in it. The center cap was the same as CSX-2058 & CSX-2372 I remember because I made a comment to Stevie that the 68/428 (dont remember that csx#) had the red, white & blue cobra emblem & all the rest had the black & silver AC center cap. So I guess it all depends on what was on the shelf when it came time to slap the wheel on.

Bill, I can tell you that before it left for France a couple of weeks ago, CSX 3116 had the plastic black cap with the red, white, and blue snake head that is most commonly used today. But that could not have been the same center cap as the one on CSX 2058, since it was a worm and sector car and used the old flat wheel with the bakelite raised horn button in its center. What were you imbibing when you were out driving it, anyway? 2372 would have come with the black and silver AC cap, but it may have been changed to the colorful one.

Beat me to that one Ned.

Also, worth note, the original caps has a slight difference than the reproductions produced today.

Anyone know this change?

Ned I remember the flat style wheel with the bakelite rased horn you spoke of. While that may have been the original wheel on 2058. When Steve owned 2058, it was not original black w/red int. but green w/black int. The one I remember on 2058 was black with silver AC letters. Butt as it was 40+ years ago, I could be wrong. I do remember 1 or 2 of the 3 Healey 3000's had the bakelite style as well. As to 3116, it did have the black/silver AC cap. I know it's in UK now as I just got a e-mail from the new owner today. He is in hopes of driving it for the 1st time in June. After all the paperwork is done. As to imbibing during our romps? It was the early 70's! WE NEVER! That was always after the race was won. Just like it says in the rule book

Yep. I understand completely. And BTW, that was just water in that bottle under the seat labeled "Painkiller." As for 2058, today it has the standard steering wheel for cars in that serial # range. If it had a rack & pinion-style wheel that could accept a plastic center cap way back when, I can't say anything about that ...

I can confirm that CSX3116 had a plastic black cap with the red, white, and blue snake head before leaving for Europe... but it has now a black cap with the silver snake head, as originally fitted and as Sage remembers !
