The latter. Solid roller lifters take a beating because of lash and spring pressures. The good lifters are pressure fed and the real good lifters are pressure fed and bushed, like Jeff's. However, it's always good to have plenty of oil there to help with lifter life.

I use both the solenoid to maintain idle RPM AND I use the clutch w/1st or 2nd gear to slow the engine down right before shutting her off. Works perfect every time...

Put it in second and let the clutch out. Works perfect every time. My idle is set at 1100 rpms.

Philosophical mental exercise here. Diesels and even the newer Dodge high performance big hemi's use sprayers on the bottom side of the pistons. I'm thinking to control temps. So why not put sprayers on solid rollers?

You guys are solid. I took the carb off and went back to square transfer slot settings. Adjusted idle mixture using a vacuum gauge (not my wideband sensor, that's another story) and I landed on about 1100 RPM. Practiced letting out clutch while shutting engine, while in driveway so I didn't accidentally hit the wall in my garage when learning. You're right, it's very easy to learn. Removed solenoid and wiring. I think I'm set as far as this goes - thanks!
But now, do I need the colder AR3910 plugs, or should I stick with the ones I have (I think AR 3924)?

It takes 10-15 min to swap them out, it would be good data.

I've had two guys that have been around FEs for many years tell me sometimes there just isn't a solution to a little run-on and using the clutch is the answer. Mine was dieseling about half the time so I started using the clutch. Now it is second nature so no problem at all. Avoid lurching by not letting the clutch out too soon after you turn off the ignition. You don't need to let the clutch out very much - just enough to put a bit of a load on the engine and it will stop smoothly.

Back in the 70's, I had a car that, on a good day, would diesel on for a good five or six seconds. Somehow, it never really bothered me. Sometimes I would just sit there and marvel how it just kept on going even with the key off.

You gotta watch about letting them run on for more than a couple of revolutions....it's possible for them to kick back and run backwards.
