I think a 6500 rpm engine would be a good bit cheaper and more reliable to build. From my experiences, that kind of powerband can support some low end power and street manners.

If you're wanting Webers for looks, that's one thing, but if you're wanting more peak hp and the ease of tuning, I would look towards a traditional single carb setup.

Yes, Webers for the"right look".

If ease of tuning was a big concern something modern with closed loop fuel injection would have been a much smarter choice - but it doesn't have quite the same bling factor when the hood is up

does an EFI setup (stack or throttle body) lessen the bucking at low RPM at all if you are using a big cam?

Yes... my latest engine is injected (throttle body). It makes peak hp @ 7400 rpm and cruises in any gear (6spd) @ 1400 rpm without bucking. My other engines were built for track use. This time around I built for street use and low maintenance, without giving up any performance. Same cid, injected, bigger heads, and a hydraulic roller made more HP at 200 rpm higher. We gave up over-rev because of the hydraulic cam, but I don't need over-rev on the street anyway.

Note: 27 different combinations were dyno tested during development.

This is the beauty of forums to be discussing ideas we have for builds and then hearing what really works. Not from parts counter people but from the boys in the trenches with real world experience. These types of people are everywhere the internet makes it so much easier to find them.
We will be watching for this 289 build and hope to hear how it turns out.
