Snake bite!
I am always careful to step out and over the pipes. Always telling everyone "watch the pipes, watch the pipes". So I swing my left leg over the pipe and my right shoe comes off. Not thinking I stretch back to slide my shoe back on and this pulls my left leg onto the pipe.
Anyone smell burning flesh? Oh yeah that's mine, son of a gun this hurts! Gotta a nice bite mark, be careful out there boys!

I just bought a small welding blanket 18x18 and it works great just drape it over the pipes when entering and exiting.

No need for any protection now. You'll never do it again!
My wife, myself and my dog were all bitten when I first got a cobra in 2007. Hasn't happened since.

Buddy,
I did what Genolan did and I never did get a bite though I came close a time or two. When you are racing and the adrenalin is going and you come into the pits to stop sometimes it is hard to remember. I think the old saying that Once the Helmet goes on all common sense leaves is true. My near bite came when I dropped a wrench and it went under the car a little bit. I started to reach under there and felt the heat from the pipe and got my hand back quickly and then moved the car to get the wrench.

I have only come close enough to feel the warmth and regularly warn my passengers. I do have a bite on the hand from reaching to the starter bolts and forgetting the headers are really hot. Its faded now. I do love my car though. It was in the low 70's tonight and had to go for a ride. Lots of fun!

Always have to be on guard. I let mine down last 2 weeks ago. I always remember to step away except then. Pulled into a gas station and got gas. Went to start the car and it was dead! Got out all dissheveled and asked the guy next to me for a jump. Hooked up the battery in the trunk area and went to get in to start the car...BAM...got me. I forgot because I was thinking of other stuff.. Nice 2x3 burn. Hurt for a week

Just on a side note, but still a burn. my friend was wearing a metal watch band and shorted it out between the body and the starter whilst changing a oil filter. Instant heat and welded itself on so he had to wrench his hand loose. Nice permanent red watch band.

Yup...these damn things definitely introduce a whole different layer to the man-car relationship. Besides the leg grillings, you got the quickjack supports leaving dents in your shins (or head if your under the front working on it), the elbow jam on the one-two shift if you have gorilla arms, the wire stabs you get when securing the knockoffs...
...only car I know that gives its owners their own patina.

With all the galleries, I am surprised there is not a collection of snakebite photos!

The welder's blanket idea works great. I cut mine to extend toward the back of the pipe and installed it with a couple of snaps. It rolls up out of the way when not in use. So far, I've never forgotton to warn passengers about the hot pipes and really only use this for passengers that I think need it. So far, no burns...
