Anybody lining up for the new Shelby Cobra?
Another 50th anniversary model coming out soon. I'll be taking a tour of the factory which happens to be the first day of orders if someone needs me to take their deposit out.

so basically SAI buys a Kirkham alloy ($90K), slaps on Shelby badges, charges double price, and makes the customer wait 18 months? Sounds too good to be true

So, let's follow the breadcrumbs back a little...
Are they making alloy bodies in Vegas? Don't think so.
Where do those alloy bodies come from? I have a guess ..

Just once I'd like to see someone from SAI or Kirkham respond to this kind of comment and tell us exactly who does what with the aluminum Shelby cars. I don't believe it is as simple as some people claim.

This has been discussed in the past before several times.
Shelby buys the frame and aluminum body from Kirkham and then builds their car up from there in Vegas. Shelby uses original CSX3000 style suspension as opposed to the Kirkham billet suspension. Kirkham has said that Shelby also buys some miscellaneous parts from them too, but Shelby has their own set of suppliers for their aluminum cars. Shelby does not buy a Kirkham roller.
However with the last 50th anniversary Shelby cars, there was a slight difference in that the Kirkham frames and bodies were shipped from Poland to South Africa (instead of Vegas), so that all of the 50th anniversary cars were completed consistently in South Africa.
I am bit too lazy to go searching through old threads. There is a thread where I had posted pictures of aluminum cars at Vegas, both CSX1000 (sourced from AC) and CSX4000/CSX7000 cars (sourced from Kirkham) which are starting off as body and frame. There is another thread were David Kirkham mentions that for frames supplied to Shelby, they put the motor mounts in a slightly different location from an original car, as opposed to Kirkham which puts the motor mounts in the correct location. This information is also found in the SAAC registry. As for the last 50th anniversary body/frames being shipped from Poland to South Africa, that is mentioned in another thread and I think someone posted a picture related to that (I am not sure, but the picture might have been from computerworks (ron)).
Oh, I know where my pictures are from Shelby Vegas are...
CSX4000 body/frames sourced from Kirkham (as noted by the Kirkham 427 style oil cooler scoop)
CSX7000 body/frame sourced from Kirkham (there is a thread where David Kirkham mentions that Shelby specifies this incorrect style oil cooler scoop for FIA cars).
CSX1000 body/frame sourced from AC (note the oil cooler scoop and the 427 style FIA suitcase bump to the interior behind the seats (as opposed to being a trunk adjustment as on the 289 cars). Kirkham does not do the 427 FIA interior suitcase bump on their cars.

And I vaguely remember when Amy was president of Shelby and she used to post here fairly regularly. There was a thread were she was discussing how the aluminum cars were mostly assembled in Vegas while the fiberglass cars were mostly built in South Africa and Mexico (at that time).

By the time your done with an alloy car, you'll have 200 to 215K into it. That's approaching Ford GT country. I don't see this generation that's coming up, wanting to pay what these cars are probably going to be worth in 20-30 years. I don't think the interest or mindset will be there after we are all gone. Just my .02 worth.

ha ha ha ha. A 200 Ford gt hasn't existed for 3 years. A salvage car unrepaired went for something like 150k. Most driver cars are closer to 300k.
Lance told me he would build me an alloy Daytona (csx9000) for around 300k. That's a hand rolled body from the same guys that build the csx1000 cars

On the Shelby American Facebook page where they announce the 50th Cobras someone using the name Chris Kirkham made a comment something to the effect of "Hey, I made (or built) that car!" I assumed that Chris is from the company known as Kirkham.
In another instance, I was talking to a Superformance Dealer at a car show in Denver CO and he told me the CSX fiberglass bodies and the Superformance fiberglass bodies are one and the same, both made by the same company in the same factory.
i know (from visiting Shelby American LV quite a few times) that Shelby American doesn't *build* their Cobras, they "finish" them.

Not. They are based on different original cars and no two of the originals were the same. Kirkham and Shelby parts are not interchangeable. Just like Shelby and spf fiberglass cars and not from the same roots. Manufactured in the same factory yes but not the same lines spitting parts out at the end.

Actually the Superformance body (for their own SPF replicas) is based on the heavily altered and modified post 1983 Contemporary replica body, which was originally based on CSX 3045 before the unfortunate modifications. The fiberglass Shelby bodies manufactured by the same company are based directly on an original CSX car and look completely different (relatively speaking, and to the trained eye, of course )

Tony,
Kirkham builds the original style suspension. It is an option.
Best, Bret.

Al, of this gets confusing at times trying to figure out just what Cobras have what badges and which ones are the desirable ones.

Is it correct to say.....?
Fiberglass = made by Superformance and entire car will be made there?
Alloy/aluminum = made by Kirkham and will be assembled at Shelby?
Which car would have the greatest collector and resale value?
Would there be an advantage for the fiberglass vs. alloy other than purchase price?
