Default A question about IRS design

Does the spindle/upright of a independent rear suspension have any castor designed into it?

Or just the obvious camber and toe-in adjustments?

Just curious.

Cheers
Greg

Default drive train angle could pass for caster

my427cobra Greg If you have a 4 link setup, it is kind of a caster adjustment. The most important thing in the rearend IMO is equal toe both sides and about -3/4 degree of camber. The thurst alignment of the car should be "0" when done. I do this with the car balanced in the 49/51 ratio of front to rear weights on the corners. This is with your weight in the drivers seat. LIve weight, not dumbbells. My battery is also in the trunk on the right side above the r/r tire. Extra 40 pounds helps with traction. Hope this helps. Rick L.

It's possible for the rear upright to be angled, but it really can't be described as caster since the toe changes are built into the jounce/rebound geometry. If there's a tilt, it is usually a result of practical considerations when building in anti-squat and/or anti-lift.

There's a specific thread on this issue at Independent Rear Suspension Forum » IRS Caster, Is It Needed?

You may want to poke around the IRS Forum, or search on 'caster' or 'castor' Independent Rear Suspension Forum
