The COB/COX leaf spring cars were Cobra's and badged as such on the nose, and with the "AC" badge on the rear. Ned can set us straight though.

The leaf spring COB/COX cars were referred to as "AC 289 Cobra"

Buzz: The 'earlier' leaf spring cars were all 289's. Perhaps you're thinking of the two coil spring cars that were sold without engines. One was exported to the USA and completed as a 427 powered car by Holman and Moody

Those photos are of a coil spring car
Starting on page 334 of the 2008 Cobra Registry you can see a number of leaf spring AC Cobra 289's with Cobra badges on the front.

I don't want to contradict John (CompClassics) as he's correct, the photos he posted are of an "AC 289 Sports" but it's a later coil spring car.
For historical reference on an open forum though, this is a "COX" car I photographed in San Diego a couple years ago. Stupidly, I didn't get the chassis number though!

Anyway, note it's a rack and pinion car, 6" Well-Laced Dunlop wheels, Smiths gauges and front Cobra badge.

This looks to me like COX6057.

The leaf-spring COB/COX6000-series cars were sold as "AC Cobras" whereas the coil-spring COB/COX6100-series were sold as "AC 289 Sports" models. The main reason for this is that Shelby had sold the Cobra trademark to Ford by the time AC Cars started making the 289 Sports, and they not able to keep using the name.

So there were no big block, coil sprung COB/COX Cobras built by AC before the 289 Sports? I remember watching a British documentary featuring Cobras years ago and there was a segment devoted to this fellow who had saved up back in the day and bought himself a Cobra. It was definitely a right hand drive coil spring car and he described it as having a "7 litre big block V8".

SAI says that the CSX4000 numbers are gone, yet say there are only 650 cars in the series. That leaves 350 VINs unaccounted for... Now Gary did tell me that they were holding some back for alloy cars, yet there are two CSX6000 alloy cars.

It relates directly to an earlier posting (#4) comparing current production numbers to original production numbers.

Several of the coil spring, both LHD and RHD, cars have been 'converted' to big block engines by their owners.

Strange, there is no accounting for the CSX4XXXLA (Latin America) serial numbered Cobras, I know that there are some out there as a client has one? Wasn't there also a CSX4XXXSA (South Africa)?

Maybe you could move yourself to another topic - no need to bother the moderators. Comparing production numbers and stats on the original Cobras is a completely logical and natural offshoot of this discussion.

Thanks - I held the misconception for years that there were a few bona-fide original, non-Shelby 427 AC Cobras out there. Never too old to learn.

Are you sure they're not included in the 4000 series numbers? I would expect them to be.

They held some back for the 50th anniversary edition. Maybe they're holding more for future special editions.

Sure, there's the 50th special edition of the 428ci Cobras with round tail lights and the 50th special edition of the return of the 427ci Cobras without oil cooler scoops, and the 50th special edition of the Lone Star, and the 50th special edition of the AC 289 Sport etc. etc. etc... you get the picture.

Yeah, and I had one to boot. So that makes the total possible population of CSX4000 cars somewhere around 1007 or a few more, or less.
