Default Need help with fuel sending unit

The original sending unit has never worked since the car was delivered so they shipped a replacement (the unit on the right, part # SUP04-90-240-33). When I compared it to old unit, my first question "where's the disk that fastens to the end?" then it dawned on me that it's probably inside the tank. I also noticed the end of the old unit was ground down as if it was rubbing against the bottom of the tank, which I confirmed when I tried to install the new unit becaues it too was bottoming out on the tank. Apparently, the aluminum tube is either too long or mounting hole for the sending unit is too low.

As far as solutions, I might be able to bend the aluminum tube back so the tip will clear the bottom of the tank but I'm concerned about breaking the electrical components. The only other solution is to doublestack the cork gaskets, but I still think i'll have interference problems. Any ideas?

Almost forgot to ask.....can anyone tell me the purpose of the disk?

I think I would slow down and figure out what is really wrong and what is happening. The sender being too long is a symptom.

After all that is complete I would replace my fuel filter, it is probably filled with the metal from the end of that tube!

Hey Mike, it touching the bottom is a problem because it's going to try and wear a hole through the bladder. I think the ring on the end is to try and make a washer and spread that versus the tube having a wad punch effect. I think we discussed these already and because of their position and height they will read full until about 1/3 of a tank then drop quickly to empty from there. I cut the outer tube with a tube cutter and the inner with wire cutters, it makes it a lot cleaner. You could do that to get a tad more clearance on the end or deburr that one and straighten it out some. Once you have the tube trimmed to length calibrate it to the gauge with it out of the car. Instructions are here or call me to talk you through it. http://www.centroidproducts.com/pic-cal-3-15-2011.pdf
