Congrats on the run. Not picking on you, just wondering how you got them to let you go that fast with the single hoop?

They approved the car for 200MPH, and I was required to earn different speed licenses before I receive a license to drive 200MPH. But all that was done the first time I entered in 2012 and honestly don't clearly remember all the details; it may have received certain exclusions due to it's age and authenticity. However, you can read the rules because they are posted on the website at MojaveMile.com.

This was my 5th entry and probably my 15th try, ( I was beginning to think I should apply for the world record of most failed attempts!)

I've been reading a lot of those rules lately as I'm prepping my car for some high speed work. That's why I asked. I'm having trouble coming up with a bolt in cage that will meet all rules for 200, and it's a six point. Even by their rules, cars that are age exempted are limited to lower speeds.

Once again, not picking at you, in fact, I'm very encouraged seeing this as they would have a tough time turning me away if allowing you to run. While my cage won't meet the rules exactly, I'm comfortable that it's a safe design and that's all that should really matter anyway.

EDIT: So you going to go for the even 200?

Yes, congratulations. Amazing to me that body shape from the 60's with only a slight mod can put up supercar speeds.

Default Cobra top speed record?

Cool accomplishment Virgil! As far as top speed record for a Cobra though, I believe that may belong to CSX3339. In '68 with a TP engine making 750 flywheel HP and an aluminum fairing hard top the car was supposedly clocked at 221.3 mph at Bonneville with owner Kevin Doheney at the wheel.

Virgil:

Congrats on breaking the record at the Mojave Magnum event. I think your run made the most impact on those watching the days' runs, especially when the official speed flashed on the board.

I caught this photo of you coming off of the runway after your record run showing a prideful thumbs up. Enjoy!

PS: The black Dodge Challenger who honked at you and gave you a thumbs up on the road home.

Beautiful photo!

I love the use of the quick jack mounting points to give the splitter some rigidity.
While a thread talking about pushing an aerodynamic-as-a-parachute Cobra into near as dammit to a Bill Cosby's comedy skit, I just have a question about the Hoosiers. What sizes are you running? I love the diameters and the stagger.

In fact, I love a whole lot about your car!

First of all congratulations on your accomplishment, running a 90" wheel base 200 miles an hour takes a very brave person! I would bet if you lowered your car an inch or two you would pick up several miles per hour, good luck on future runs.

Thumbs up

Virgil,
Man ! I really like the way that chin spoiler is hooked up. Who's idea was that.
Did you need to adjust much before each pass ?
A really neat accomplishment. Congratulations.

Hersh

ANSWERS:
(1) Tires: Hoosiers - Front -255's / Rear- 275's
(2) Spolier: Me and a buddy made the spoiler here in my shop . (I thought it might help with stability, I doubt it helps performance; it's not an air dam. I've ran several times without it and maybe I will next year. I've only used it at Mojave never for road race, which is the car's primary use.)

MORE:
The entire car was born here in my shop about 10 years ago. Bought it from Shelby American in Vegas back in 2001 they delivered it (rolling chassis) 2003, took 3 years to build and finished it in 2006. ( Took me about a year and a half to paint it.) I have about a zillion pictures of the entire process plus some bad news pictures from when I buried it in the wall at Willow (circa 2011). but took her home and fixed her up; Mauh sure wasn't happy about that whole ordeal!!!

Anyone that may be interested in viewing this car's portfolio may send a request E-mail to Virgil@virg.biz and I'll send you a dropbox invitation and you can take your time to go through the folders that may be of interest.

Default Dash Picture

Carol Shelby signed the birds eye maple wood dash as a " special edition "
( I know many aficionados disapprove , but I just like it)
