Billboard tyre/tire repair

Hi guys

I have picked up a builders screw or nail in my B F Good - billboard tyre/tire.

It is in the middle of the tyre/tire and easily removed.

My local tyre/tire guy has said they cannot have a plug fitted or be repaired.



I have previously had a plug placed in one prior and then a patch placed inside.

Any thoughts have tyre/tire shops changed their approach to repairing these tyres/tires.

Anyone there run Billboards and repaired punctures...

Or do we just trash them once punctured

The tyre shops won't use plugs for liability issues.
A mate of mine runs a tyre shop in Geelong.
He may help you or alternatively you can buy a plug kit from Repco and do it yourself.
I carry one of those kits in my cobra with a pump in case of a flat in the middle of nowhere.

I plug all my own tires. The best way is to plug it, grind off the inside of the plug, and patch it. No big deal.

My daily driver has a plug in 2 tires. One has almost 60k on it with the plug.

They also make a nifty little Plug-Patch combination solution. Best of both worlds. Any tire with a repair is no longer deemed usable on a racetrack.

Billboards are very thin and were only meant for weekend racing and then tossed. That being said, I recall a similar thread on CC a while back that covered proper repairing on these tires (do a search). You are either limited to either a patch or a patch w/inner tube. Just have the tire shop be very careful when they rough-up the interior of the affected patch area with a sanding disc and air grinder...it's considerably thinner than "DOT Approved" tires and easy to go too deep.

The tire/tyre shop pulled the screw and was going to plug and place a patch. Their sales rep called in and saw the tire/tyre and suggested not to repair it.

Mmm will try again..

Hey Bernie, can you take a photo of the damage if you can.
Would be good if you can show some sort of reference for me to compare hole size-maybe a ruler (no NOT your Missus !) or a tape measure near the puncture.
If the screw went in vertically it should be pretty straight forward, depending on the size of the hole. If however, it went in at an angle, it could be a real issue.
FYI for everyone, 2 repairs in the one tyre is the max. allowable under law, and the only legal repair is to use a Kombi/Combi plug, and the tyre MUST be removed from the rim. Bead sleeves and internal patches are verboten as well.
CORD plugs have been banned from use for over 15 years, and I don't understand how they are still allowed to be sold, but that's another story best left.
Some people ***** and moan about all the above, but I value my life, wife, rugrats and car more than them

I did just a plug on my BB`s myself and had no problems at all for thousands of miles.

So long as it is in the tread area and not too close the edge of the tread.

No way in the world would I patch a bias ply tire used in a high performance situation.

As said before in this thread, these tires are made to buy on Friday and throw them out on Monday. Even Goodyear Racing told me the same.

I know one person that replaced a tire just because the sidewall had been lightly scuffed (curbed).

I really can't imagine driving a car with these tires at 200+MPH on the Mulsanne straight.

Most of the driving I did on those tires was monthly breakfast meet ups and not high performance situations for sure.

I totally agree with the replacement of scuffed sidewall tires.
