If I recall, the paint was 'blown over' in the original color since it was far from perfect following the removal of the white. Not sure why the side lights were removed. Plenty of original build 'defects' were left untouched but there are small, very clever (and hard to find) modifications that help make the car easier to live with and drive - the MkIII left a bit to be desired back in the day. Despite the full nut & bolt rebuild, I would guess that in excess of 95% of the car is as was - everything that could be saved was saved. The bag tanks went of course, although the new tanks replicate the shape of the bags (and one of the mods allows easy removal of the fuel tanks, a near-impossible task previously!)

The hardest part of the resto work was to remove a thick layer of nasty black paint that some genius plastered all over the interior when it was painted white!! It might have seemed a good idea at the time....maybe....

While looking for interesting old pictures related to Louie Unser (brother of Jerry, Al and Bobby), I found this old thread posted by Dave MacDonald's brother Doug.

If you want the short version, it's about Louie as a Shelby mechanic, Dave, and Shelby....and some minor adjustments that resulted in what you can see in the second picture.

Louie was working as one of Shelby’s specialized suspension mechanics prior to Dave’s arrival. When Dave first went to the shop, he introduced the two of them and told Louie that he was assigning him to Dave’s Cobra.

Louie prepared the Cobra’s suspension and the team went to Riverside to road test it. They timed Dave’s laps and were really excited about how fast they were. By the time Dave pulled back into the pits the first time, Louie was pumped—feeling pretty proud that the car was performing so well.

Dave talked to Shelby and told him there were just a couple of things that needed adjusting. Carroll went up to Louie and relayed Dave’s message—which infuriated Louie. Just who did this kid think he was giving instructions to a mechanic who’d spent years perfecting his abilities to produce top running cars. Still, since he worked for Shelby, he had to do what he was told.

Sure enough, after those adjustments were made, Dave’s times dropped even more so once again, Louie felt quite proud of the car he’d prepared. However, when Dave came into the pits for the second time, Louie saw him once again talking to Shelby and making various motions. Shelby again relayed Dave’s comments to Louie—who by this time really had the hairs on the back of his neck sticking straight up. Once again, with Shelby as his boss he had no other option other than to make the adjustment Dave asked for.

When Dave went out onto the track again, his times dropped even further. Everyone was really getting excited about how quickly he was getting around the track. When Dave pulled into the pits for the third time, Louie again saw Dave talking to Shelby and making some small gestures.

Shelby told Louie that Dave was really happy with the car but he felt it needed just a tiny tweak and it would be perfect. By this time, Louie is furious so he decided he’d fix that smart-alecky kid and he didn’t tweak it a little bit—he tweaked it a LOT!

Dave went back to the track—but didn’t come back by the pit area. Pretty soon they heard the announcement that “Car 97’s support staff is needed at Turn 6.” They immediately rushed to Turn 6 where they saw the Cobra—with the front end sticking through the fence! Dave told them “I thought I needed just a little tweak more, but I guess that was too much.”

Louie said that made a believer of him. From that point forward, “Whatever Dave wanted, Dave got.” %

The roof of the museum is meant to be like that - they also display cars on top. Not a great idea in my opinion, but what do I know? It made the lighting a bit on the dark side and not ideal for displaying vehicles at their best. Normally, 1103 was parked alongside CSX3019 as they were 'loaned' to the museum by the same owner.

1001 is shown in 1970 (I think) when it served as a road car. The location is an unsurfaced car park which I suspect is in Sussex in the south of the UK. It raced during 1968 and '69 when it was owned by Malaya Garage of Billingshurst, Sussex who dealt in Porsche and Mercedes. I could have purchased it when I saw it in their showroom for (UK) £3,750. I had around £200 to my name at the time....and, as a well-used and abused race car, it was in a seriously rough state!! It was sold to Terry Smith who had it road registered.

Know what you mean Trevor. Back in 1976, there was a Ferrari Daytona on a trailer in a truck wreckers near home. 365 GTB/4s were produced from '69 to '73 so it can't have been very old, but it was there, unloved, gathering dust for at least a year. I remember thinking at least once a week that I should go in and ask what the story was. It was only shortly after the 1973 oil crisis and 'supercars' were a little out of favour, but realistically, it still would have been well out of my pay-rate at the time.
