Oil Puke Tank
In looking for an oil puke tank, I ran across this old gas tank that looked similar... It is 6 14/16" long and 3 1/2" in diameter...Is that the correct size? If not, is anyone reproducing them? Looks like Nick Acton no longer has them in stock?

Nick is probably temporarily out of stock. Kirkham used to sell them as well, so you might want to check with them if you don't want to wait.

Before PCVs, venting was provided by the oil vapor tank, commonly called a puke tank (a puke tank is also what you set up to catch overflow from your cooling system, especially at the track). The vapors were drawn out by a road draft tube (runs down to hang down into the airflow near the starter)...the remaining oil would drain down to the pan. Old grey beards like myself will recall the oil stain that ran down the middle of the lanes on a road before PCVs returned the vapors to the engine to be burned up. Old school...and it works perfectly (and has for the dozen years I've run the tin can on the track and on long cruises). Mine was set up by the boys from Provo to be as original as possible. I do not run a PCV...I prefer to leave my stain on the road. I also like to run gas through my engine, which is not a diesel. :p

Yes, original tanks were modified lawn mower tanks. The one you have pictured looks like the right one but IMO, building one isn't as easy as it looks. You're better off buying one built.

Originals used an old gas tank very similar to that. It was about that length with a 4-3/16" diameter. I had a box of the originals I converted to puke tanks that are all gone. I do have a couple in stock that I grab whenever I find them. There is also a modern repop I supply and I'm waiting on the next batch. I make the beaded tubes for them and silicon bronze them together with the TIG. You should convert that treasure in to one. Let me know if I can help with parts or converting it. Word to the wise, don't bake it to clean it or powdercoat it, the solder on the cap flange and centre seam runs out.

I decided to design and construct my own and I also run a PCV valve. Made of stainless that has been polished The breather is from MOON. No oil streak left on the road.

Chris has decided the smaller tank looked a little to small so is sending a bigger tank for the same treatment.
I have these tanks in stock if any body is looking for one. The tank with the blue back ground is one of our new tanks. |

You did an amazing job...The first one is 3 1/2" in diameter and would be typically be fine but I have my firewall recessed back a few inches so it looses it's impact and visibility...Therefore I have decided to go a little larger... My new tank is approx. 4 1/4" in diameter where I believe the originals where between 4 and 4 1/4 so should suit me well...Thanks again for all your help and I look forward to other projects with you.
