Cool Whirring noise just below gear shifter

Hi I'm looking for some advice or comments on a strange whirring noise coming from around the gear shifter area or as I sit in the car just next to my left elbow. I have a Tremec T5 manual 5 speed. Is it likely to be the drive shaft center bearing? Any ideas please.

When does it make the noise?
Does it get louder or quieter when you push in the clutch?
Is it a vibrating sound or grinding?

If the car isn't moving then the drive shaft wouldn't be turning and that would eliminate that. If you are moving and it is loud enough to hear, it could be a U-Joint but remember sound is hard to p;in down to a location in cars some times. Try accelerating and backing off and see if you can hear the sound and if so, when is it the loudest.

Thanks guys, there is no noise when the car is not moving, no grinding or vibrating. Ron I think it may be the rear drive shaft seal that is dry, I suppose the solution would be to replace the seal?

I think I have sovled the problem for now at least, by lubricating the output shaft seal/ rubber boot with some grease. Fingers crossed.

Good luck. I hope that was all it was. I could never be so lucky.
