Default Anyone heard of a Scarab?

I've been following these cars for some time now.

If you know anything about Shelby American history you know about those cars.

The Shelby Venice building used to be where Scarabs were built, Phil Remington came with the building when Shelby took it over.

And three were sold a few weeks ago at the Goodwood Revival. Check the Bonhams website. (I kicked the tires...

6 years ago i've seen molds and few aluminium panels and a big poster but Daytona under build was more atractive for my eyes.

Nice looking car but for me does not have the same appeal the Cobra leaves me with.

I agree with mdross1.

Seems like something is missing. It doesn't have that "Oh yeah baby" look to it.

Just my opinion.

Its one of the many 1950s /60s built up sports racing cars that graced the tracks along side and against the likes of Jaguar Ferrari etc . May of been the inspiration Shelby used to wanna build a car of his own.

Considering that's a late '50s design, beats the pants off of anything else of that time - according to Chuck Daigh. IMO better looking than the 289 and a toss up with the 427 which came 8 years later.

“There was really no competition for us. There wasn’t any car in the world that I couldn’t beat with the Scarab. If we had raced against the Mercedes or the Ferraris or the whatevers, we could have beaten them – easily.”

It was a bitsa this and bitsa that.. it had no real chance of matching the might of the mercedes teams. That ole vette engine would of been blown into the track dust...

I'm sure Chuck was quite aware of what it would take to end up in the winner's circle.

He also won the 1958 United States Sports Car Grand Prix at Riverside, California, driving a Scarab. This event was largely credited with launching professional sports car racing in the United States.

I passed on one advertised on e-bay a couple of years ago. It looked a lot like the blue one in the above picture. It sold in the 35k-38k range. I keep thinking about that missed opportunity. I think it's a bad ass car.

Augie Pabst was a owner and driver of a Scarab in vintage races.

There are many ties to the Cobra, Shelby even had success racing a Scarab. This one recently took a place next to my CSX 4000 aluminum car. The Scarab aluminum body is made by Kirkham. It makes the Cobra look and drive like a luxury car, my second favorite body next to the Cobra. So far nobody has asked if it's a replica because nobody knows what the heck it is.

Congratulations - awesome purchase! I like the look of the Scarab, but when it comes to Shelby-connected sports racers of that era, IMO none match the sheer beauty of form exhibited by the Aston Martin DBR1 driven to victory at LeMans by Shelby and Salvadori.

LMH likes this.

I don't think I could swing one of those, all the sports racers of the late 50's are beautiful.
