Extinguisher mounting question - then i shut up

Sorry for the barrage of questions lately.

So i just purchased a cool looking chrome extinguisher. A totally narcissistic and aesthetic decision. (Hopefully)

It came with a mounting bracket but no screws. What screws should i use? Self tapping metal screws or what?

Also, what is the consensus on where it should be mounted. I like between the seats on the trunk wall, but also like the console mount above the shifter. I'm unsure of whats underneath each mounting position, hence the question of what screw to use.

Placing it on the tunnel, to the rear of the shifter, makes for an excellent arm rest. Keep in mind that it can become a projectile if you have an accident, so try and mount it securely and the latching system should also be reasonably secure.

If your bracket is vehicle rated, it should be labeled accordingly. The manufacturer should be able to answer that question if it isn't labeled. Mine wasn't so I modified it with some very strong stainless steel quick-release clamps.

You're going in to fiberglass most likely, so sheet metal screws or anything of that ilk are definitely out. Same thing for rivnuts or similar.

You'll need to use nuts and bolts (a.k.a. machine screws) - something that fastens on both sides. Fender washers are a good idea to distribute the load as well. If you go through the trunk wall, you should probably use screws as short as possible and put vinyl caps on whatever length of screw is sticking out beyond the nut - or cut it off flush with a Dremel tool.

Just make sure that you mount it securely, it would probably be easiest to mount it between the seats, as it gives you access through the trunk. As stated previously, if you get in an accident it can become a projectile and I know of racers who used stainless steel clams that broke during an accident. The last thing you need is an 8 lb projectile heading towards you.

I have the same question which I posted on the FFR cars forum. I have a Safecraft and purchased this one for the same reason you stated. Could not resist the look and had the best "halon".
I am leaning towards the rear bulkhead location and may try to through bolt if possible. But it does seem to get in the way of my right arm. Just a touch but I was hoping it would not. Others have mentioned under the dash on the tunnel but my master is there. Take a look at the other forum post yesterday. Henry

I mounted my extinguisher on the tunnel between the seats. A couple of things to note:

Yes, it makes a good armrest, but I mounted mine with the nozzle end toward the shifter and have scraped my elbow a number of times. I tuck a blanket over it while I'm driving now.

Depending upon how you hold your arm when you shift you may be banging your elbow on the end of the extinguisher.

On a "do-over" I would consider mounting the extinguisher as shown in AZ_Cobra_Mike's picture above. I like the look of the extinguisher mounted on the rollbar down by the passenger footwell, but this might result in scratched legs or passenger discomfort.

I'd mount it onto the panel like AZ Mike's photo.

Mine is in the trunk.
Did look at mounting under dash over the tranny.
Left the open for future full fire ex system.

There are other brands but, I used Lawson Nutserts.
They install like a poprivet & you screw right into them. Best solution for your type of bracket mounting. Clean, no having to deal with nuts & washers on the backside & you get to laugh at everyone else who does it the hard way.

The nutserts are great for many operations but you need a fender washer to spread the load over a greater area of the fiberglass. A 6 pound extinguisher weighs 60 pounds in a crash. I suggest large washers or better yet a plate that spans the area between the mounting bolts to spread the load.

But hey, it's your head.......

It's mounting the mount that is the issue!

Agreed - I wouldn't trust nutserts and rivnuts in fiberglass to hold any weight in a collision or impact unless reinforced on the back side. As you suggested, large / fender washers or, better yet, a plate to spread the load.

You really want the extinguisher easily assessable. For me it turned out to be just behind the shifter. Very easy to grab sitting in the seat or reaching in the car. You be the judge and mount it solidly.

I had mine mounted as the picture shows between the seats and on the back wall, but mine had 4 mounting holes in the bracket that went long ways and then it had a center snap ring that held the extinguisher in place. I drilled the 4 bracket holes and then got a piece of thick aluminum that I cut the same length as the mounting bracket and put that on the back side of the back wall to make sure the small chrome bolts couldn't pull put through the wall. That was in 1996 and it is still just as solid as when I put it in. Also I had no problem with hitting my elbow on the extinguisher.

I mounted mine on the floor (my car had a steel floor pan)just in front of the driver's seat. It didn't get in the way of anything and I could reach it without unstrapping. Mine wasn't chrome though.

On my FFR MK IV if I mount on the rear bulkhead between the seats it would be into aluminum. Why would nutserts be a bad idea in aluminum???
