Thank you everyone for all the info regarding tires. After talking to some fellow cobra guys at a show and the feed back here, I am leaning toward Cooper Cobras. I want a soft ride and some durability.

Craig,
I am running Michelin Defenders 215-70 x15 on my 289 ERA Slabside.
As earlier mentioned, I am pleased with them realizing higher speed ratings are available but for my driving these do well.

I'm running the equivalent Mickey Thompson tires (made by Cooper and identical to Cooper Cobras except sidewall lettering) on my ERA and although I don't push the car hard, they seem to be very good tires.

I forget, do you run the MT SR's or the ST's?

ST are the tires that are sister to the Cooper Cobras. The SRs are based on an Avon carcass (All of them, MT, Cooper and Avon are owned by the same company)

Yup. As Mark IV said....they are all Cooper tires. My Avons had Cooper stickers on them along with the Avon logo...

My car has 17" wheels and good year eagle F1's that were put on in 2010. I need to replace the tires due to age but they have a ton of tread on them.....overall the tires handle great but the 17" tires let you feel every bump in the road. I drove a car with 15" wheels and Avons and it was MUCH smoother. My car feels more planted with the 17" wheels but I wouldn't be opposed to going with the Avons and 15" wheels. I would think you could get good miles out of them depending on how hard you drove it and what type of climate you are in. I sure wish there was a magical way to make the 17"s ride like those 15"s! Good luck with your new tires

Question, regarding tire pressure. With the BF Goodrich tires that came with the car, Backdraft said to use 28 in the front and 29 in the back. With the new Cooper Cobras the dealer put 35 in both the front and back. Which pressure should I use?

I think that 35 is way too much! I believe the rule of thumb is 1 lb for every 100 lbs of car weight or thereabouts. I'm sure someone will clarify...

The car I drive with 15" wheels was running 22psi around all 4 corners. I believe that car is about 2500lb so by the time the tires warm up you would have 24-25psi in them. That car rode great.....he had some other tires before the Avons and he said they rode way better but wouldn't hook up hence the change.

35 psi is way too much, you will be bouncing all over the road with every little divot or pot hole you will be better off in the 24-28 psi range.

I have Nitto 555 drag radials, recently I noted a hitch in the giddy up on the right front side of the car. Went into Discount tire in Surprise and he looked at the manufacture date (2004) stamped on the tire and would not rebalance them. He made me promise him that I would not take the car to any high speed (he didn't define high speed) He said the oils in the tires as the years go by dry up from the inside out and weakens them considerably. Car has 5000 miles so tires have plenty of tread. I took it to a couple other tire centers and without leading them into the subject they all rejected any involvement with them. I took them to Fletchers over by Sun City West and they balanced them. As there are only a few weeks left of driving I've opted to wait until the fall to replace the tires. I will definitely purchase NITTO 555's
