According to my book straight from Ford for 63-65, the serial numbers read as follows by digit numbers from left to right...

Model Year
Assembly Plant
Body Serial Code
Engine Code
The remaining numbers are the consecutive unit number

Now an original car ID Plate would also have numbers on the top of the plate identifying body type, color code, trim code, date code, rear axle and trans codes.

This number being discussed is the serial number...

The VIN: 5F07C735272

Decodes as follows:

5=1965
F=Dearborn Assembly Plant
07=2dr Mustang Coupe
C=289 2V low compression engine
735272 is the production line number, usually starting at 100001

In this case, the original owner of the car used an existing Mustang Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) to register the car.

It is my hope that the car the VIN came from is no longer in existence, as to have two vehicles with the same VIN, being actively titled in the federal database will cause all sorts of headaches for the owners.

A VIN is stamped into the frame of a vehicle, thus identifying that vehicle with that decodable set of numbers and letters unique to that particular vehicle.

A Warranty plate is not permanently affixed to a chassis (pop rivets or rose rivets are not permanent), thus when you see such a plate mounted on a drivers door (in the case of a vintage Mustang)



The warranty number is the identical number/letter combination to the VIN permanently stamped into the chassis. You'll notice this tag is also marked below the VIN: "Not for title or Registration Purposes", again the reason for this is because it is not permanently attached to the chassis.

You can don that? I still wonder why it just doesn't have an FFR number..
This would be red flag problems in CA I would think. Maybe I'm wrong since he got it registered (somehow).

So, the builder of this FFR decided to register it with the VIN of a 1965 Mustang? Why? What's the point of that? Cheap registration fees? Avoid emissions controls?

And how the heck would a buyer go about checking a Federal database to figure if the original 1965 Mustang was destroyed? And what does it matter, if it was destroyed, it's not like the original car was rebuilt. The FFR is completely different car and it's a kit car.

I can't even imagine going into the CA DMV and explaining that story. I mean, I had a hard time just getting them to get my name and address correct.

Every time I simply buy a used car from out-of-state, they give me the "3rd degree."

I believe there are folks out there with access to the Fed Database that can run that number and give you the who, what and where one or both cars are...just sayin'.

My good friend that has a small body shop ran across same deal on a "classic car" and suspected something up. Had it hauled out of his shop unfinished. About 2 weeks later the owner was arrested and the car was seized and destroyed. Pretty expensive game.

It most definitely was that one. I wasn't interested in it because I wanted the Bondurant built SPF next to it and they said "would you be interested for $48K?"

An interesting side note on this particular car, Vanguard did not sell the car on Ebay, as the last auction they had on this car (CLICK HERE) the car was only bid up to $33,601.50, with the reserve not met. This was on May 19, 2014 .
