Brands/builds most likely to hold value
Back in the market for a Cobra and trying to decide if I'm best suited in my current budget range of 30-40k or, if I'm safer jumping into the 40-50k range to preserve resale value. I'd likely keep the car for a few years (3-5 or so as I get bored and swap out toys every few years) and would like to at least break even when I sell, if not make a few bucks. At my current range, I'm looking at home builds and seeing Backdrafts for mid to high 40k range. If the Backdraft holds its value beter, I'm ok spending the extra cash. Would love to go Superformance or Kirkham but, just can't hit that price range unless I sold my other toys and went with a single toy car.
What are your thoughts on brand if I wan to preserve resale value?
Thanks

Buy used...Superformances appear to bottom out in the mid to low 40's....I just bought a Shell Valley/Mid States Street Cobra with 2100 miles for $34,000.....at this point the car appears to be every bit as good as my Superformance was...
I actually like it better without the roll bars, side pipes ect.... smooth, not so loud...

What are thoughts on which holds value best? In general, I assume factory built holds better over kit? As for factory built, Superformance seems to have a better name than Backdraft, if car condition and miles were equal?

IMO factory built is a big plus and Superformance seems to sell new or used for 10k more then Backdraft.
You can't go wrong with either one and resale will be better on either one over a do-it-yourself car.

Values are generally good on these cars.
Better the replication of 60's car the better.

If it was me in your shoes, I'd hunt for an ERA. (Or contemporary ccx).
Quality cars with a tight supply line therefore prices are likely to stay stable or even see an increase.
Only issue you'll have is finding one am ERA for $40k.
But, the game you're playing is all about your buy in. ie: the lower you buy below market value the better your chances of seeing your money returned to you on sale. This will be true for any kit you decide to purchase.
Good luck with it.

The contemporary can be found in your range (be very careful, though), but not likely an ERA.

As stated above.
Check out car even CSX can be a wreck.
Also even the best can have problems. Just buyer knowledge and get help from friends that have the cars or seek your regional SAAC rep.
Always helps.

Just as Jeff said - Any car can be a wreck, brand names not excluded.

E.R.A. 427SC Cobra, Crimson Red, For Sale
This car represents great value for one inclined to stretch a little on a $50k budget.
Just my humble opinion.

You nailed it with that one Dimis! Beautiful car and seems well sorted. And yes, any of them will have their own issues and idiosyncrasies!

As previously stated, there are no car makes that are without problems; you need to closely inspect any car and make sure that it has been we sorted and driven enough to work the bugs out. My experience has been that ERA and Superformance hold their values fairly well. You will have a difficult time finding one in the $40K range, although they can be found if you pay attention to multiple sources.
Lot's of good advice in the prior posts.

Here is a cobra, cost $240K to build. 0 miles. Never titled. Built this year 2016 and seller wants $199K. Where is the car hobby logic there? Build a car, dont drive it, and sell it for $40K less.

Kit cars always loose money unless the buyer is a moron.

Thanks all for the input here, definitely helpful.
Sorry for any confusion, I'm not looking for an investment by any means. I turn over fun cars too often so I always look to buy them right and get the types of cars that are easy to resell later down the road. If I break even or even lose a little bit over a few years, in happy. Just can't lose thousands on every car I turn over as then the hobby gets too expensive and the wifey is less approving :-)

That's not what it says. it says it would cost over 240K to rebuilt it the same way today.
