It would take some pretty good grinding to remove the stamp in the front upright. It might be better to weld the stamped figures up and grind back to original contour.
There's more conspiracy theories here than in a Donald Trump speech - but good luck with your build. It should be a great car.

Personally, I wouldn't do any of that. You still do not know who made the car and those items could prove valuable at a later date.
You can work on it without removing those numbers and tag. Thousands of replica Cobra's have that tag. Who cares?

It's not AC COB and the "666" has to be a someone's idea of a joke. What could be valuable? It's not a Kirkham/CSX body since has ZERO markings anywhere that would identify it as such.
If it were me, I'd remove any traces of the nonsense and build it. It's still a very nice alloy body. In fact, I'd strike a deal with Kirkham and buy all the parts from them. They have everything from original-type parts to all the billet aluminum parts.

" Many people are saying" that Ned (Cobra registrar and COB owner), Kirkham and others at SAAC are aware of this thread and have chosen to not partake in the "festivities" here.
So, unless the OP has been contacted offline by a SAAC official or Kirkham representative, their silence is deafening.

Let's assume for the moment that the OP's car is a Kirkham, then a previous owner went through the process of eliminating any Kirkham serial/VIN numbers and then make the decision to add an AC plate and stamp COB #'s in a few places? From my side of the peanut of gallery that sounds like the beginnings of a deception to me.
|
Kimmins was an early supplier of csx4000 aluminum bodied cars prior to Shelby getting involved with Kirkham. Just taking a quick look at the SAAC registry the other day I noticed that Kimmins bought a 289 chassis only from Kirkham. I suppose I should have checked if they purchased other chassis from Kirkham.

So, that doesn't rule out the possibility that the OP's Cobra was made by Kimmins, as Bill said, since Kimmins was an early supplier to Shelby?

It's not a Kimmins body. The seams are in the wrong place for a Kimmins body and the nose on Kimmins 427 buck is shorter and tighter. Doesn't match the car in question here.

Many people may well say that, and it's fine. SAAC and I are knowledgeable about the Cobras built by AC Cars in the 60's. It seems apparent this car is not one of those, as no one would be moronic enough to remove its correct COB # and replace it with one that AC never used. Which puts this car into the "something else" category. That's an area we leave to those who can claim knowledge in it.

Thanks for chiming in Ned. Always appreciate your thoughts.
BTW, the use of the " many people are saying" phrase was my humor, since Mr. Trump likes to use that phrase and DanEC mentioned Mr. Trump and his conspiracy theories in an earlier post. And Mr. Trump typically starts his conspiracy theories with the phrase " many people are saying."

Baloney. A lot of hoopla about nothing. Just build the car. Who cares what the numbers are there for and/or what they mean. They can be removed at any time.
Besides, you have no idea if it is "nonsense". Just because you "think" it doesn't make it so.

It's not in any way an AC product either.

We all have our opinions that's what makes this forum great, and this thread so interesting.
I happen to agree with you,
We're are we today? 0 for 2?
We all know a few here are having way to much fun with this hence the lack of proof to there opinions, and the language they use in there posts.
Good times!

The OP can do whatever he or she wants.
But the fact remains that it retains an AC ID plate stamped with an invalid COB number, in various spots, and it's not an AC product, as Ned Scudder, the SAAC Cobra Registrar stated.
If the OP didn't remove it, then the car could be misrepresented in the future and that's fraud. The OP is on record that he/she will remove it and thus not misrepresent it. Smart decision by the OP. So that's a win!

Hi joyridin, I agree with you that yes, numbers don't mean anything and there are all kind of tags out there but because they don't mater like you said and with this thread going crazy which gives me an idea what people may think down the road that I may be trying to pass it on as something it is not I would rather it be obvious that the tag I use was because I thought it was cool and obviously not real. Just my feeling because it doesn't really matter who actually made it, I think it will make for a very nice ride in the end.
Thanks again to everybody, I never expected a response like this but to those with all the positive and constructive comments I salute you.

Here's where I'll offer my opinion. With all due respect to the OP, the stamp of "666" is ridiculous. I'd remove it, because it just means absolutely nothing. But hey, that's me.

FWIW, That foot box tag was not produced by AC Cars Ltd nor was it stamped by AC Cars

RodKnock, I have always believed that if it is real flaunt it, if it is a copy make it known and enjoy it, like most cobra's it doesn't have to be real to enjoy it. I collect high end militaria and there is no bigger crime in my opinion than to try and pass off a fake, copy, replica etc as an original for monetary gain.

Good grief - hurry up and weld/grind that frame stamping off, cut up the AC plate and put this mess to rest. I haven't seen the Corvette guys get any more wound up over a engine stamping than this.
