Default A request to the forum moderators…forum speed

I’m telling you what you no doubt already know, but the speed of access to the Club Cobra forum for some time now has been unacceptably slow.

I’ve been checking the access numbers on “Who’s online” at various times over the last few days, and the number varies from a low of six to the highest I’ve seen at twenty-two.

I’ve been hanging around here for a while now, and these access numbers really are low. If something isn’t done to fix the access speed problem, it’s likely more long-time members are going to stay away (I’m already well-aware of quite a few) and visitors won’t make return visits….and then this great source of Cobra information is in real trouble.

If moderators only moderate and you can’t do anything about the speed, then can you please alert the people who have the capacity to return the forum’s speed to its correct state?

Thank you in anticipation,

Cheers,
Glen

Yep - it seems all the weirdness and strange messages have finally been done away with but it takes about 20 seconds to get a response to clicking on any thread. A bit more speed would be greatly appreciated.

I just joined this forum and the speed or lack there of is pathetically slow, especially compared to other forums I use.

Is this forum that broke it cannot afford to properly maintain its servers? Should we take up a collection to help them fix this problem???

Perhaps a bigger cam and more compression?

I'm thinking a Latham Supercharger would be uber cool.

Anyone remember them?

Where does the $$ from paid advertising go? High school kids with 0 money and free server service don't have their websites crash like CC often does.

Seriously, is there anyone minding the store?

This has been going on for a long time, and isn't getting any better. As I've mentioned before, if this is financial, ask for some help. I'm sure there are some of us willing to chip in. On the other hand, the lack of attention makes one wonder if anyone even cares.

No kidding. My 14 year old unemployed son has multiple servers going all the time.

I haven't been on here in a long time. Today I decided to get more involved again, only to see that its performing like a 4 cylinder chevette. Who runs the site? Have they abandoned it. Maybe nick.bright@valnet.net can do something about the performance since they seem to host it. I've run some super large forum sites that get over 5 million visitors a day and kept them performing like a Veyron. Its not that hard.

This is a legitimate question. And before pounding the drumbeat of donations, maybe some of the folks that have already donated can speak to the value they have received. Things get better for a few days and then slowly degrade.

Personally, I don't think the servers are the issue but rather that the database itself has gotten corrupted. Observe that the For Sale and Gallery subforums have no performance issues. Are they separate databases?

Or perhaps everyone has been sent to "Miserable Mode" jail.

The causes of the slowness could be many.

Oversold shared server (Very likely)
IO slowness
Not enough ram
Database in need of maintenance
table scans
indexes corrupt
indexes need updating/rebuild
database in need of performance tuning

The for/sale section is most likely a seperate app /database. Could even be on a 2nd server proxied into the main site.

I'd just like to offer a different side to this than what I'm reading here. Thank you to the people that are keeping this site up. I know NOTHING about computers but it's probably no easy thing to keep this site up and running. It's been hacked a couple of times since I've joined and it's been fixed by someone who probably didn't get much sleep until it was. Yes it's slow, probably could use some money,( I know you can contribute without being asked because I have done it,) and it IS a fantastic source of information, but complaining doesn't solve any problems. THANK YOU moderators, IT guys and all who help keep CC alive and kicking. Just MY soap box sermon, not pointing fingers at anyone.

I'd wager it's a combination of everything below "not enough ram".

I think it's probably an indexing issue. I'm experienced like you and this seems the most likely culprit. I think I read somewhere that CC has their own server(s) and if a portion of their site is working it's maybe not a network IO bottleneck or multi-tenant capacity issue.

Maybe.

I did forget one...

Inadequate time to spend to fix any of the aforementioned issues.

If they want to a volunteer to help out, I'd apply, free of charge. My resume would speak for itself..

Guys, give Brent a break, the time and energy to upgrade the forum software package will take weeks---W-E-E-K-S.........There are enough issues with the upgrade and the porting of the database over that potentially, will cause a loss of major, very valuable, older data. As such, small workarounds (using CHR as a guinea pig two years ago) was partially successful, and showed the issues at upgrading this one.

Now, couple that with his full time gig (sorry, if you think this site pays the bills, you'd be sadly mistaken), a loving wife, and an active life off the web, and you start to see the bigger picture.......Or, maybe not...........Regardless you'll just have to be patient, as the world was not created in a day, and the upgrade of this forum, while indeed planned, will not happen in a day either.

Respectfully, the forum has been running poorly for weeks, many W E E K S, some may even argue months. This problem isn't new.

Most all of us would happily accept the current situation if we had any info or updates, but the radio silence from owners/moderators alike speaks volumes.
It's no wonder that people draw the conclusions they do, get frustrated, and/or check out of here.

Shame really, but how can you blame them?

I pay credit to those who have continued to visit and post in spite of this. Thanks.
Thanks also to those who have contributed in the past. Hopefully this will get sorted soon and we can enjoy some glory days.

the site has been crashing/not working for years. regardless if the owner has a LIFE outside of websites, the site should never stop working. Doesn't make any sense since the Owner owns other websites which don't crash.

Maybe it's time to sell the website to the next caretaker?

I've been coming here since 2005 at least. And its been hot and cold as far as performance. Since it seems to run on a 14 year old OS I suspect upgrades have been few and far between.
