Ever since I got my car this winter, I have been searching and thinking of a way to get more air in there. I love the oval look, but hate that 1.5" filter, both for looks and performance. And my engine is set back pretty far so I can't just put a taller filter.

Based on that engine masters test and my other limitations, somehow getting a filtered top on an oval filter seems like the best solution.

I found this lid, but don't know anything about this brand. Does anyone know if this is a reputable company?

Pic of mine attached. I wonder if I can have a custom based made and offset the assembly forward, out from under the cowl, then I can at least fit a taller filter in. Might look silly that far forward. If they made this exact filter in 18" rather than 22" I'd be ok.

I want to dyno the car this year, so I'll test with and without the filter and see how much it's choking.
I have the same exact breather on my 490 ci FE On the dyno I lost 48 rwhp with that filter

We need to have some sort of open top filter lid produced for us! I can't even do what this guy did because I have a center stud, single carb. I assume this pic is of a dual quad air cleaner.

Years ago when I had my FFR, I made a dual panel top for my single carb.

It flowed MUCH better than the stock top. I think i bought twonhonds civic k&n panels on ebay and just glued them in with epoxy.

I wish I had kept that now ��

Now I'm running one of those small 9" k&n extreme filters.
Seems to work well enough, but I did have to hammer down the funnel base to flatten it and allow it to fit.

When you look at that calculator, then watch Engine Masters AIR FILTER HORSEPOWER SHOOTOUT! Season 2 • Episode 27, you'll see there are major differences in HP loss depending on the lid, base, size and shape of the filter. Then you'll go raid the kitchen cabinets for an appropriate salad bowl to cut the bottom out of.

At the time I did my setup SD made a filter that was 2 1/8" tall vs K&N's 1 3/4" tall filter and that's the one I used. That's a bit over 20% air flow without the lid filter. I'm running a KC 482" side-oiler so I need all the air flow I can get. My carbs are custom built Quick Fuel 750s.

If you want a low profile 14" round filter that flows well and looks "old school" this is what I have for my FIA. 1967 Camaro drop base (it has a deep drop and clearance for Holley float bowls), an aluninum AFCO top and a 3" filter.

I have the oval filter with a single carb. Instead of cutting a lid for a rectangular element like Undy, I was thinking of the round top element with the center bolt down. I think it's 9" round by K&N. This was years ago but I never followed through with it. I now have a 445 which makes more power than I need and I have lost all interest in squeezing any more from it. Good enough. I did discover that with the 1 3/4" filter element, that a carb with the choke horn will drastically reduce air flow because the filter lid is almost making contact. So I did away with the choke horn. In SoCal the choke is not needed probably because of our superior blends of fuel.

As original poster, I’ve now done some Rolling Road testing and confirm that with a 427 FE the 13/4” high filter, engenders a loss of 20hp. I’m going to order the taller version, 21/4” high. It’s border line clearance wise and if the bonnet won’t shut, will make a custom drop base to get another 5/8”.
