When I had my ERA 427 and it was titled as a 1965 Ford, I made it clear to my insurance agent that the car was a replica and what it would cost to replace. You do not want to be caught claiming that your car is something that it is not if you go to file a claim. That will quite possibly result in a charge of insurance fraud.

The people I worked with at AIG knew EXACTLY what I had. It was an agreed value policy on both the Cobra and Ford GT.

I purchased ERA #804 last fall. When registering the car in NY the DMV insisted on giving the car a new VIN, NY would not accept the CT VIN the car had when I purchased it. In the process of getting a NY VIN they insisted that the car be registered as a "2020 Custom". My insurer knows the car is a 1966 ERA Cobra replica even though it is titled as a 2020 Custom. Bottom line, the car is insured at an agreed upon value regardless of what the title says.

It would be impossible to bs my insurance company (State Farm ) due to them taking pictures of the cars and most of the time I take the cars to their office for the pictures. I have 8 classic cars insured with them and they have never given me a hard time.
I could be in trouble if my county tax assessor want to tax the car as an original Cobra.

just a question from a non-cobra owner, is it hard to get a cobra insured period? I talked to a guy locally at a show that told me he had to wait a year after buying his FF cobra before a company would insure him? he walked away before I could get him to elaborate on this but that doesn't make sense to me, I've owned and built a few street rods (FG replica's etc) and never had any trouble getting insurance?

Probably because you are paying to much for the insurance you are getting.

I have done the same as The Shadow with street rods for a lot of years and have never had trouble with State Farm and I didn't pay to much. I have tried Grundy and Hagerty and others and they are always higher than State Farm. Now I don't know about a Cobra, I am going to talk to my agent in the next week or two.

Mine is "1964 SpCon" (Special Construction), in AZ. Regardless of stated value for your insurance, the AZ license and registration fee is dirt cheap, being a "1964".

Hagerty would not insure my Cobra until I had one year ownership/experience with a high hp car. I already had my Lotus Elise insured thru them.

Grundy happily agreed to insure my Cobra. And now they insure my Elise (and at a much lower rate than Hagerty!!)

My Unique FIA is titled from Delaware as a 1965 Ford Convertible. She's tagged with an "Antique" tag in Alabama. Alabama doesn't issue titles for vehicles thirty+ years old. Tag chick got info from my title and after inspection put my title in the trash. I almost went over the glass for that piece of paper. She said it "wasn't needed anymore". Anyway I got it.

I'm insured with Hagerty. I'm"stated Value" at "$40k. with $500 deductible. They gave me a little resistance because they are used to seeing guys with huge HP/lb range cars being lent out to friends and wrecked.

I have Hagerty now but will be looking for another company after April. Had it with Mike Smith (classiccarinsurance) but the company left the state of NH for some reason.

I've used Hagerty and Grundy. Both are quite high compared to Midwest Classic Insurance. Currently my agreed value policy ($55k) dropped from $286yr in TX to $216yr in SC.

Your insurance rate from any company is directly and primarily determined by your zip code. Some areas have high losses. Our insurance rates on the daily drivers increased by 50% going from small town in Colorado to Las Vegas. Surprisingly the GT rate was actually less when I switched to American Modern.

Remember that you need a hefty liability coverage limit and an umbrella policy on top of that as well. If you kill somebody with your Cobra you're stepping in to court with two strikes against you, and I know a thousand guys that would be chasing you with a multi-million dollar suit.

I brought my car to WA state in 2000 with a Nevada title and registered to me as a 65 Cobra replica. WA. changes it to KIT-V. Can you imagine a cop looking for a KIT-V. That is if they were to even look. WA did have to go with the date of chassis manufacture, which was 84.. So my car was done with emission testing every other year was over with as of 2009. I'm back with Hagerty as the company they shifted me off to now lo no longer does business in this state.

Default cobra insurance

insured my cobra with American Modern Insurance, had my 1955 thunderbird
insured with Hagerty tried to add my cobra, was told they don't insure cobra
kit cars.
Found American Modern and they insured both my cars for $150 more a year
than Hagerty was charging me for just the thunderbird gave me a higher agreed value and more coverage than Hagerty and listed my wife as a driver.

Midwest Classic Insurance uses American Modern as an Underwriter. They used to use Infinity up until March 2020.
