Bill,
I would try that. My Webers were happiest at 36 degrees total advance.

Yep, 36 degrees total. If you get detonation back the timing off until the detonation is gone. With aluminum heads you should be good though.

I would try experimenting with getting your advance in sooner. You might also want to cut down your total mechanical advance, so you can run more initial advance. You might be surprised at how much better your engine can run.

The sooner your advance kicks in the happier your engine will be. You want to achieve total advance as soon as possible, 36 degrees total is the number you want to see.
I can see what Tom is trying to accomplish and on a big block that might work well where you are using less RPM but you will be running into detonation issues if you advance the static timing and do not limit your total mechanical advance in some way so that it does not go higher than 36 degrees total. This would require reconfiguring the advance window on the mechanical advance mechanism so that it limits your total advance.

Ok. New exhaust system in. Quieter and deeper. Base timing in at 16 deg with 36 total at 2500 rpm. Carbs all synced. New plugs that don’t hotbthe piston domes. Whew! Still have to design, fab and install muffler hangers . But getting closer to first drive

Sounds smooth Bill. I am thinking that I might have to go without mufflers as I keep on hitting the mufflers on the corners and loosening the exhaust pipes. The thought of no mufflers makes my ears hurt in anticipation.

You are getting close. Keep up the good work.
