Default Exhaust headers - which coating?

I'm hoping that engine and trans. will not be too far off....so thinking of exhaust coatings.
Need advice for which coating to apply to the exhaust primaries?

Talk to your coater. Ours starts off with a white base coat no matter which final color is used. They say that their white has the best adhesion to the bare metal.

My headers from ERA are standing up extremely well on my 289 Slabside.

Bob, I need advice. If I talk to "my coater", is that a painter or a powder coater, or something different?

Glen,

I have used some high temp spray paints with mixed results and finally used a high temp wrap, doesn't look pretty but gets the job done. I know that some peoples Jet Hot or other high temp coatings.

What kinds of high temp coatings do you have available near you?

Jim, it's something I've never looked into in detail. I recall using HT paint on extractors decades ago and the paint went 'chalky'.
What wrap did you use? Something similar to what we sometimes see on GT40 exhaust primaries?

Glen,

Wish I could remember the name, but that looks like it exactly. I bought some stainless steel zip ties to keep it in place. I am still in the process of moving my stuff from the old place to the new place that I finished building and have been working on putting the shop back together. I should be back over there in a couple of days and I will look to see if I kept some packaging. I bought the wrap at a local automotive supply store.

Glen,

For my build I had the primaries and the entire exhaust system ceramic coated satin black (see page 23 of my build log). The coatings are available in a wide variety of colors & finishes. I have not had any issues with chipping, flaking or corrosion. I am sure there must be a shop in your area that offers ceramic coating or a similar process.

I have heard that the fabric wraps on exhaust manifolds can promote corrosion, but I don’t have any experience with that. It might just come down to what ‘look’ you are after.

Thanks. Yes, looks like ceramic coating might be the way to go. I have a favorite exhaust fabricator who will do the fab. of the pipes, so would make sense to ask them for advice too.

Ceramic is the best choice. I was trying to come up with that last night, bu was having a brain fart and couldn't come up with it. The paint is not a very effective method. I went that way because I was in a hurry and did not have time to shop around for a place to do it, and my budget was a little strained as well.

"Coater" references a powder-coater. Most painters don't usually have the equipment for electrostatic application of powder.

We've been using Central CT coatings for more than 20 years. Excellent quality and service.

Depending on where you live, a local coater might be the best choice for big items.

Im glad I found your post... I am ready for ceramic coating, I am about a 1 hour drive from Belmont. I will give them a try based on your experience.

Thanks for all of the replies. Ceramic coating it will be.

I had been involved somewhat with paint coating and powder coating previously for work; for those requirements, paint came out ahead on performance (high temp. wasn't one of them), but powder coating was ahead marginally on price for volume work.

Default tip on color coatings.

Hi,
If you plan on running a hydraulic cam and breaking it in for 20 minutes the silver ceramic coating will turn dull. I now only run satin black ceramic coating as it does not change color

On any new engines you want to make sure you break in and have your TUNE all set up properly before putting on newly coated headers or exhaust pipes. I know it's an extra step and PITA, but this will ensure your coatings don't fail you right away.
