Gumball Rally
The wife and I wanted to watch a good DVD, she choose Gumball Rally. Had to be at least 10 years since we last watched it, what a great, funny exciting realilistic, fantastic story, great visuals, just a great time.
If you haven't watched it in some time, do so, you'll be smiling all night.

That movie introduced me to my first look at a Cobra. That scene in the wash is where it happened for me...

While living in the northeast, I wss known to have relived the Cobra scenes in Manhattan and the Lincoln Tunnel (ah the sound of rowing through the gears in the center or right tube headed out of the city towards NJ) on an early Sunday morning or three

Bill,
I agree with you. I was known to run through the gears in a couple of tunnels while driving my old Cobra. What a terrific sound that was.

Would be cool to have that trophy! I’m guessing it was just a prop relegated to storage after filming. Still would be neat to have though!

What added to the sense of realism
was director Charles Bail's decision
for principle cast to do most of their
own on-camera driving.
The NY start through city streets was actual
captured audio of those screen cars
including the Camero/Ferrari/Cobra
tunnel blast scene. Those distant roaring
engines heard by worker and pedestrian
actors was the real deal, not post production
folly added for effect.
Films like Gumball Rally, Gone In 60 Seconds,
Vanishing Point, Bullitt, etc, were special because
the action was all analog, no CGI garbage.

I have been searching for it for years. Did a college paper (small dissertation) for a film class, interviewed actors and actresses, film crew, stunt people (men and women), have a multi signed script somewhere in my storage archives, along with a copy of the original, unedited script as well.. It's been 25 years since I've even looked at what I have, I just may have to dig out the box(es) and see what else I have....Maybe a lead as to who took the trophy home, or who built it........

The Cobra was great and all, but paled in comparison to the Linda Vaughn cameo

The Linda Vaughn character was based on female SCCA racecar driver Donna Mae Mims. Her and two other girls had the Bra-Less Racing Team. They actually drove a Cadillac Limo which they rolled over in Texas.

Great stuff there Bill!
I spent time searching online some months back to no avail. Figured ‘someone' might know, yet not much online!
The Gumball Rally changed my life for the better. It was my first view of a Cobra and I was determined to have one.
Our niece, on my wife’s side, lived with us 5 summers and many weekends in the school year when she’d lost her parents. She was then lost in a tragic car accident at age 16.
Our family had been fond of swimming with sea turtles in Hawaii. Her cousin honored her by getting a turtle tattoo with our niece’s thumbprint pattern as the turtle shell.
Fast forward over a decade…Last year my wife began having positive, heartfelt dreams of wave after wave of sea turtles frolicking all around her at the seashore in the sun. It made her think fondly of our niece.
That same week I bought the Gumball Rally so I could finally watch it ‘at will’. I’d seen it many times before. My wife loves the Cobra, and this was the first time for her watching the movie. We had a great time watching it together.
At the end, the Cobra reigned victorious and they showed the trophy. Our jaws dropped and we just sat there in awe, rewinding several times, both our eyes locked on the crown jewel of our Cobra relationship. The turtle atop the Gumball trophy, of course, a golden turtle.
All the times I’d watched that movie before, I’d never once noticed any turtle. Life was aligned at this point and the Cobra was meant to be. Now I get to spend freely on it and not look back! ☺
Long story short, if that trophy ever presented itself, I’d gladly be in the running for it. I’m sure I’m not the only one. I’d love to present that to my wife, I think it would be very meaningful to her.
That’s my turtle story…

Raul Julia's performance in that movie made that movie. Like every scene with him.
Probably my favorite.

Ah, the cult movie "Gumball Rally". This brings back some great memories, and yes the girl's were all #1 in our group, bunch of horny 20-30yo guys . I brought a copy the day it came out in VHS (Remember those ) That night I invited the "Bremerton Sports Car Club" to watch the movie. Now most of our member's were (240z, RX-7, Porsche 914, etc) owners, not a lot of V-8 cars. The scene that stopped everyone in their tracks, was coming out of the gas station, after filling-up the Cobra & the Daytona (Before ripping the steering wheel off the T-Bucket ). When they hit the Hwy, and every time the Cobra grabbed another gear, the nose went up, and it just drove away from the Daytona. Everyone said do you see that, I said un-huh, that's what Cobras do We wore out that part of the tape so much so, I had to buy a new copy Made a lot of believer that day. Cheers TommyRot.

Best scene is coming up out of the LA River. The Cobra and the Ferrari go at it side by side for a few seconds and you can see the Cobra out accelerate the Ferrari! Total blast!

Larry,
That very scene locked in my determination to get a Cobra. The gear-shift, the pulling ahead, the sound, the raw, brutal nature….all very cool.
I'd written that into my prior post, then removed it, as it was already long.
Concur!
