Any NewJersey owners here, need help...
Any NJ Cobra owners purchase a NY CAR with an assigned NY VIN ? Was the car described as a "Custom" on the title, and not a 1965 as an example. Any trouble registering the car, or getting it inspected. In NY cars disignated as a "CUSTOM" and assigned a NYS VIN are not emission tested just safety tested. Has that been your experience in NJ when dealing with a NY car. Thanks in advance for any information you can provide.

Hi. I live in New Jersey and I am the second owner of a 2014 Backdraft that was originally purchased in Florida and then brought up here. The car is titled as a 1965 replica. That is what my registration says also. The car is exempt from any MV inspection. I know there are a couple of other threads on here discussing the process of registering and titling in New Jersey. You may want to search for them. Here is the link to one of them.

My problem is my car is registered as a 2007 custom, required by NY. In NY that means I am exempted for emission requirements and only get safety checks. I want to know if that exemption would apply in NJ re inspections.

Is the current NY title in your name?
If not, you may need to go through the enhanced inspection and title the way NJ wants it to be. See my notes in the previously linked thread for the details.

Pa Vin
I transferred a Pa Vin title from my Cobra to Nj without any problems on inspection several years ago.

Thanks to those who responded. I'm trying to sell my NY car to someone in NJ. Am I correct in assuming that when he goes to register my "2007 Custom" it will be changed on the NJ title to "Cobra Replicia", and there fore would not be subject to any emission testing? He is afraid that because my title says "2007" he will have to have the car comply with emission regulations.

I should add that the car went through the NY process and was assigned a NY VIN.

If it has an actual title, NJ will titled it as whatever the NY title states. if it has a transferable registration, NJ will make them go through the whole process again. Your buyers best bet is to contact the NJ DMV and asl the special titles division what they process will be, as I have not lived in NJ since 2007 and quite a bit, I am certain, has changed.

If the car has a title and a VIN NJ will register the car. It might register it as reconstructed (RECON) vehicle. The person will need to take the title, a picture of the VIN as well. They might request a an shadowing sketch also, where you take a piece of paper, put it over the VIN and use a the side of a pencil and shadow over the VIN to prove that it was embossed.
But since it has a title NJ will register it but might title it something different.
