Texas Registration
For those that have your cars registered in Texas, how does the description of your car read?
That is, for example, does is say 1966 Ford Cobra, or 2002 ERA or something else.

Mine said 65 Cobra, and I ran a 65 plate on the rear. I can ship you the plate I used to run if you'd like.

they let you run a vintage 1965 plate in Texas? or is the plate a new plate that is personalized?

I registered mine in Texas under the 'Custom Car' regulations as:
ASVE 2020 RD Replica: 1965 SHEL
My first title listed COBR and they required me to send the title in to have it changed to SHEL for some reason.

The custom car registration is the way to go, only issue is finding an ASE Master tech inspection. My Backdraft wound up being registered as a 65 Ford, just depends on the DPS office, kind of a crap shoot. The custom car route is much better, you only need the ASE inspection once. All of this info is available as a pdf from the Texas DPS.
This is the primary reason I chose a Texas builder for my new Cobra (UCC), they do all the registration and title work. Unlike BDR which was a pain in the rear end.

Oy...finding an ASE Master isn’t easy. I’ve called about 5 places and most have never heard of anything like this.

I feel your pain, keep trying. I found a lot of the Master Techs don’t keep up their certifications either. Touch base with the Austin Cobra Club, I’m sure somebody can help you.

The locator map will find shops with ASE cert mechs in your area. These shops need to have 75% of mechs cert-ed or have a master onsite.

Rather far from you but Nick has done many of these and went over my entire build with extreme attention to detail. He also 4-wheel aligned it at the same time.

Texas Title
I registered a Backdraft #359 about two years ago in Texas. It had standard Texas registration where he was paying for "lick and stick" safety and emission test annually. The car has a 392 Ford Crate Racing motor with no OBD II port. For this reason, it should have never passed inspection and a reputable and honest inspection station should have rejected.
My title has Year 2005, Make of Vehicle ASVE, Body Style CV and under remarks Replica: (1965 RDST).
I went with Custom Vehicle registration that means annual registration but NO inspections.
The issue with obtaining a Custom Vehicle registration is finding that ASE Master Mechanic for the VRF 852 (think that is the form) inspection. So many mechanics and shops say they have one but that cannot provide the evidence that the State of Texas requires. Did find one on Louetta in Houston. Think it was Fleet America, the place with the BIG American flag outside.
Like someone mentioned, Texas can be a "crap shoot" what they do with registration. Custom Vehicle is what you want without a doubt to avoid the annual safety and emission that the car should never pass.

I had Antique registration, $50 every 5 years and no reoccurring inspections.
Rear tag only, no windshield sticker.

So I spoke with a person in Travis County Tax Office (I was referred here by the DMV) to discuss registration requirements.
They said that since the car was titled in another state I don't need the ASE Safety inspection, just the old title, proof of insurance, the Texas application (VTR-130U), ID and the regular inspection. However, I wonder what the regular inspection process would be for a car assembled in 2002 with an 351W which I assume was manufactured some time in the 1970s; I am back to the DMV to ask this question but wondering if anyone has any insights...?

I got a quick answer back from the DMV; they said that the inspection is only to confirm the VIN and safety stuff; no emissions are required...seems too easy?

I had mine registered in July as any other new (to me) car. The car is registered as a “1965 SHEB MODEL COB (exact wording on the title application receipt from Travis County), with a VIN of CSX6128

For those that are interest, to close this thread out:
I received my new title from Texas recently. It was all very easy.
Since it was previously titled in another state (NC), it made the process very simple and "regular".
I received a regular inspection that can be gotten at any inspection station. The inspection was of the old car variety, i.e. no emissions, not much of anything else. Really they just verified the VIN. Usually a Texas inspection costs $18-$19 for a newer car but my inspection was less than $10 due to the inspection "lite" nature.
Title was simple too; just delivered the old title; no other documentation or inspection was necessary.
Mine is a ERA 289FIA.
Texas title reads:
Year Model: 2002
Make of Vehicle: FORD
Body Style: CV [Assume this means Convertible]
Model: COB [Not sure what this stands for]
Odometer Reading: EXEMPT
Remarks: Replica: 1996 FORD
Previous Owner: SAME AS APPLICANT

Are you sure the remarks are correct? It says replica 1996 Ford, shouldn't it be 1966 Ford
