To cover wood steering wheel or not?

I sprayed mine with Black Plastidip. Works well.....It did peel once , but its so easy to peel and respray.

I just wear a pair of black MECHANIX "Covert".

Inexpensive ($20), breathable so hands don't perspire and
hand oils/perspiration stays off the steering wheel.

They also provide a good measure of thermal protection when
the engine hood is open for oil check or touch inspection.

Form-fitting for good tactile feel.

When gloves get dirty or damaged, big deal, I keep an extra pair in the trunk.

The covert version is basically all black even the Mechanix logo.
Not usually in stores but always available online.

Keep the expensive leather driving gloves for an evening out.

And lastly......
I would NEVER cover a Moto-Lita wood steering wheel.
It's a signature trait of the Cobra designed by Simon Green.
Of course that's only my opinion.

You could probably give it a coat of polyurethane with some anti skid material that's used on boats. Not sure how it looks in a clear solution though since it's white in the can. You would have to test it. Or you could use fine sand which was used before manufactured non skid was developed.

Another one for the wood wheel and gloves when necessary! The look and feel when driving really takes me back in time like it should. Totally different vibe than when the car had a leather wheel. I use gloves when it's cold or if I'm driving a curvy road in a spirited manner.

Me too!
The way I see it is that the only steering wheel a Cobra should have is a wood-rimmed Moto-Lita wheel.
My Alfa has a smaller leather covered Moto-Lita and it's great, but it's not a Cobra so "leather covered" is quite OK.
I almost always wear gloves when driving anyway, no matter which car I'm driving, so no change for me.

I have purchased a pair of leather driving gloves. I started back in 71 driving my 56 AC Bristol with a pair of soft thin leather gloves. I actually wore holes in those gloves. These gloves are a lot stiffer and need breaking in like a pair of new boots.

I bought a pair of chauffer lambskin gloves. Full unlined glove, exposed knuckles, wrist closure. Still a little stiff for now. Any tricks for breaking in= softening these gloves for a better grip, in a hurry?

I know this is from left field but you might want to stop by your local horse tack store or animal feed dealer and ask them what the recommend for softening leather, like they use on horse bridals etc. I forget the name of the product but they should be able to recommend something.

Neetsfoot oil works well. if I have new leather gloves and sometimes with shoes I'll get my hands wet with it and put them inside and wiggle around until there is good flexibility. On the outside too. It will dry eventually but at first it might look wet for a few days.

I also use deerskin work gloves to drive autocross in. The bright yellow ones.
You have to search through the gloves on offer at farm and fleet or the like to find some which are flexible though. When you find a nice soft pair they are wonderful. Not hot on a hot day either.

NT - Thanks for the tip. I’d been researching gloves and decided to try those. I ordered the black stitch version, they arrived promptly and fit and work great. They seem thick and durable enough, yet are supple and workable right out of the box.

They’re relatively inexpensive, so easy to support having multiple gloves if desired (with fingers, different colors, etc.), and testing for interest. I was looking at a Fratelli Orsini glove, yet they were out of the desired model in my size, so I gave these a try. I’m very pleased initially with this purchase.

NT - ok a driving report now…

The gloves are supple and tactile, really grip the wheel, and I hardly knew I had them on during our 2.5 hour drive today.

I know of that guy even though I don’t really watch him.

If I were to alter my usage based on his usage, my only fear would be if he ever wore jeans, black t-shirts, and sneakers, because I’d be screwed, literally running around in my skivvies then! ☺

By the way, not to disappoint, those gloves did come with removable knuckle spikes, just not pictured! ☺☺
