One option is a modified MGB. There are several kits that make it easy to install a Rover V8 (the UK SBF/SBC) or a 60° GM V6 out of a 90s Camaro. They don't have the grunt of a modern 302, but you're talking costs on the order of $20-30k, not $50k+. There are coilover setups for sale that bolt right in.
Get yourself a '67 with wire wheels and you have a gorgeous, fast Miata that can keep company with a Ferrari 250 in a parking lot.

If you'd consider a MGB with a V6/V8 then a Miata with a LS/T56 could be an option. AND, and it would have a top that works.
My Superformance tops kept you "less wet".
The LS/Miata package can be very effective.
The Honda S2000, either gen 1 or 2 is a great car.

I love a lot of the cars here. When I wanted something different than a Cobra I decided to build my own Cheetah Tribute. Tribute because my car is not a replica. I tried to incorporate the the styling of the Cheetah with my ideas of how I wanted it.
- Dedicated Space frame. The pics are of a new frame that I'm finishing up. (the roll bar and shocks are for mock up)
-freshened LS1 with Tremec TKX
- 52% rear weight
- 1900lbs
- MGB windshield
The pictures of the red car are of one that I built a couple of years ago. It drives great. It has a mild SBC and Richmond 4 speed. I'm building the new one with the upgraded drivetrain. I'll finish it to a higher standard with nice paint and interior. The goal is to make a removable hard top as well. The red car is going up for sale. Having fun!

From what I understand, you would want a 77 or later, since the firewall is already for the Rover engine, and the motor mounts are better. Then lower the car, and put chrome bumpers on, and you have a great car. Oh, the Rover V8 weighs roughly 40 lbs less then the iron MG 4!

Best Sleeper.
Not much 240-Z left on that car I just sold my RX-7/V-8 (302 Mustang, T-5) Best sleeper, I've ever owned. Purschie 911SC weren't much of a problem to drive by

Hi. On CSX 2372
What do know or remember about CSX2372 and the fender flares?

I am the original owner of an Elan that I restored after 50 years of ownership. Better Hp/weight ratio than the 289 Cobra. And handling is unparalleled. Lots of parts available. Very good worldwide support group (lotuselan.net). And the cars are not pricey.
Having said that I am going in the direction of embarking on a 289 Cobra myself. The Cobra would be a replica(more or less) of another car from my youth (CSX 2372). Probably won’t be as “fast” as my Lotus, but I’m not in a competition.

I have a personal soft spot for the Stretched Buick Stratoliner (Four Hole) Station Wagon Convertibles with a Blown Buick NailHead and a B&M HydroStick.

Considering the OP has not been here since 12-02-2021 I'm game to do a follow up.

With my current RHD Caterham 7 SV (202hp, IRS rear, 5spd) roughly 1,228lbs I find it more of a go cart for adults, small steering wheel. Low slung, you sit less than 4" off the ground. Gravel gets in your lap if the side curtains are not installed, most drivers cannot see you....Yet, it can be flung with reckless abandon when the opportunity is provided to do so safely.

My MK1A Tiger, 306ci, 4spd, wilwood disk brake, modified suspension equipped convertible rides exactly like my ERA 289 FIA Cobra. A bit more civilized with roll up windows, but just as fun and quirky as the other. I find going out to dinner, we are more likely to drive the Tiger than the Cobra, or the Caterham, less likely to cause a scene (exhaust note), but still unique enough to turn heads.

Came close to one of those. Would have painted it to look like the Prisoner car.
