Default Just when I thought i was done......

So after body and paint and time at Mike Mcluskeys which by the way was an amazing experience the car is sweet! So, i go to the DMV and all goes well EXCEPT I need the smog, OK, so I go early today and find out :

The previous owner put on an Edelbeock intake and carb. This will never pass CA smog. I am def not changin out intake and carb, so before I sell. is there anything else that may be an option.

I was told to check out the Smog Referree program... seems I need a stiker with a CARB # on it.

All feedback welcome.

Ford had a 4V intake from 83-85 that was carb legal. You'll need to locate it on a "Four Eyes" web forum

Thx a lot Bill

I am gonna make a few calls monday to the Ca smog check referee station and to Edelbrock to see if they have other info relative to this issue. If no luck, car is goin on BAT!.

Not worth the time and expense to R&R the manifold and the carb and the cats I was told are also non compliant for CA.

Time to MOVE ON BABY!

Problem is your Aurora is viewed as 1982 car and not covered under the California SPCNS SB100 Specially Constructed Vehicle exemption. With that exemption CARB compliant parts are not required. You just need a PCV valve as a 1962-65 Cobra of the period would have had.

I don't know if your car could qualify under SB100 since it was delivered by the manufacturer as a turnkey car and is already registered as a non-exempt 1982. Being 1982 it needs to conform to 1982 emissions standards and that means no non-approved CARB parts. Moreover as a 1982 it will have to be subject to testing every two years for registration renewal. If older than 1975 or exempted via SB100 then no further testings are required. Completely exempt.

You appear to have fallen into a crack in the regulations in that you have a Cobra replica but it was originally registered as an EPA and DOT compliant 1982 Aurora convertible roadster.

I think your only choices are to fit the original 1982 equipment or sell the car to a state that does not follow the CARB rules.

From the Internet:

SPOT ON! Cannot go the SB100 since it is a manufactured car with a VIn.. DMV was a breeze. I am goin to check with a referee as it SEEMS if the aftermarket in this case the manifold is a REPLACEMENT part is may bypass that CARB statue. Other wise you nailed it!

Car has been reg in AZ MD and FLA already with no issues..

Somebody outside of Ca will get a kool car, or a do it yourselfer can make those changes and try to smog it in CA.

Got it, I saw the previous reply that it was a factory car from the 80s. Can't you put it back? (Or as you mentioned, maybe a "repair")... If you like your current config put the compliant part on and then swap it back...

Every time I hear about stuff like this I'm reinforced on my decision not to take a job in CA.

Since I am not a do it your self-er I dont want to go down that road of seek out parts, replace and swap out after I get smog potentially!

I think it was actually you that said regarding the fit and comfort in the car that it would be advised to FIND ANOTHER CAR.... Your words ring true here also!!!!

A friend of mine has a mid-80's AC/Autokraft, turnkey from England with a 302 and 5 speed. He worked with a local Cobra/Mustang shop to ensure that his 302 was smog compliant. It was not difficult. Needed FI and an a stock ECU, etc... You might want to investigate what it would take to be smog compliant before giving up. At least you'll know what the light at the end of the tunnel is :-))
