Looking for ideas\advice.
427 side oiler, Quick Fuel carb. Runs well, except when slowing for traffic, lights, etc. Throttle closed, surges starting about 2000 RPM and slower.
Never did this before engine "rebuild". Engine is still basically the same,
except new heads and carb. Can furnish more information if needed. Thanks in advance for thoughts and ideas.

Check your float levels first. Sounds like you might be sloshing fuel into the engine when braking.

What S1965 said. Sounds very much like fuel surge.

The more details you can post, the better off we can assist you.
General specs on engine?
Carb, make, model, size?

Thank you, I will check float levels first. Contemporary Cobra, engine is 427 with 428 crank stroked to 4.125". Reed solid lifter cam, BBM heads, 11.7 compression, Mallory billet distributor. Quick Fuel carb, 830 Super Street, 830cfm, dual inlet, mechanical secondaries. Primary main jet 78 secondary 84. I have a lot of information from the original owner, and from the engine builder I used. I can probably find the answer to any questions. I appreciate your advice, Gene

Too much carb for starters, you can only tweak it so much.
Do you have access to a chassis dyno? That is going to be your best bet.

Update. Didn't have time to do much today, but did find the secondary float level a bit high. Adjusted both secondary and primary float levels about 1/8" lower than recommended. Went for a short ride, was much better. Next will adjust idle mixture,
hopefully tomorrow. Thank you to all who responded, will further update.

Due to weather and other things I had to do, plus electric fan switch went bad, I haven't driven the car last few days. I did check the idle mixture, and it seems good where it was.
Will take a longer drive as soon as I can, it may be ok after lowering the float levels.
Thank you all!
