Default Quick ? Would you purchase if you didn't know the MFG?

Looking at a Cobra that was bought a couple of years ago at auction. the current owner doesn't know the history of the car or who built or who the MFG is. I am trying to track as much info down as I can, but no luck finding any info. Would you buy it not knowing any of the above? thanks from a newbie.

No chance. You'd also want to know who did assembly if a real kit and supplied power train.

The value would vary widely depending on the details you don't yet know. The only way to buy it safely would be to assume the worst and lowball the offer, or get someone who knows them to check it out. It would be well worth the cost of an appraisal to avoid getting burned.

Do not confuse appraisal with pre-purchase inspection. They are different. The same person may do both. The appraisal will tell you what it's worth. The PPI will tell you how big of a can of worms you're opening. There aren't many people that are qualified to do a Cobra PPI. The depth will depend on if it's a real kit or a roller.

Look on the chassis for a VIN... If you can't find one that's a hint.

You would do better to show pictures of the undercarriage, the firewall, the engine compartment and forward suspension supports and the trunk. Also a side shot that would show the profile of the body from the side.

Each manufacturer has tell-tale signs and these tend to show up in certain photos

The long door would indicate a 96" wheelbase. Hunter and several others have that feature.

Sold for $47K in January 2024 at Mecum in Florida. Buyer's premium is presumably on top of that price.

Same VIN. 39 photos, but none of frame / chassis.

Need engine compartment, trunk, front and rear suspension pics at the very least. Large overhang of the rear body to interior, as well as the door latch assembly point to a not so popular manufacturer who is long out of existence, but need the other pictures to be certain. As of right now, I'll say "Unique Fabrication & Design", a short lived company in the late 80's and early 90's.

Not, I repeat, NOT Unique Motorcars, which is a completely different, and well respected company out of Alabama.

Rounded hood scoop opening - check
Wide rear tires extending beyond fender lip - check
Wide lip/flange around rear of cockpit, engine bay and door openings - check
Short, thick roll bar - check
Distinct body shape - check.

All indications are that the body of that car came from Street Beasts - a derivative of the infamous CMC (Classic Motor Carriages) kit car manufacturer. While some owners have painstakingly managed to finish some of these replicas to a relatively decent level of finish, many languished unfinished or poorly done because of basic low quality and bad engineering of the basic components.
When you see a shiny Cobra for sale or at auction with no mention whatsoever of the manufacturer, safe bet that it might be a CMC or Street Beasts and the seller is aware of the generally negative reputation throughout the community and is actively concealing the brand to minimize collateral damage to the selling price.

It's a Shell Valley. They have that odd 2" roll bar.
