Goodwood Revival 2023
Two of the most famous (and valuable) GT-40's ever made were in the paddock.
#2 driven by Bruce McLaren and Chris Amon winning Le Mans 66
#6 (Gulf livery #9 in 1968) driven by Pedro Rodriquez and Lucien Bianchi winning Le Mans 68
The same chassis driven by Jacky Ickx and Jacky Oliver winning Le Mans 69.
You do get to see them driven at speed on the Goodwood track.
The Whitsun Trophy attracts at least a couple dozen GT40s from
around the world.

The car was piloted by Gentleman Jack Sears and Dick Thompson The Flying Dentist, (you just can't make these things up.) The car had been in to bad shunts and the engine would loose oil pressure after a few second of full throttle. At hour twelve, Sears came in to the pits and said, "this is pointless"! After a bit of an argument, Alan said the words every Cobra lover should know by heart, "but we've got to try and finish one Ford at least, you can do it, just drive the bloody thing on it's oil pressure!" And Sears did, second after second, minute after minute, rev it up, then back off, hour after mind numbing hour! Alan latter said about Gentleman Jack, "he could have blown it on Mulsanne any time, but he just sat there doing what he was told for the rest of the race. Now that is discipline!" Ferrari took the first three positions, and first in Division III, But Sears and Thompson came in a respectable eighth overall, and garnered 12 points. Those points meant that the only way Ferrari could win Division III, was if, they won all the remaining races and the Cobra's failed to garner any points for the rest season. Cheers, Dennis

I stumbled on some photos of the 65 Le Mans Daytona driven by Sears and Thompson, the only Ford to finish! The number 11 car and it's drivers, deserve a lot more from the Cobra comunnity! Cheers, Dennis

A formation of (3) can be seen just above the tail center frame.
I might add you can go for a ride in the (2) seater on the left for a mere $4,000.

The Spitfire in the foreground (OU-V) is an ex Battle of Britain Spitfire and flew 176 combat missions. Post war it was converted to a 2 seater training aircraft. It is now based at Sywell airport a few miles from me and I see it regularly overhead giving paid passenger flights. It has been involved in a number of accidents two of which were local. The most recent was in May of this year when it crash landed due to pilot error. The Air Accident Investigation Board showed the. pilot held a commercial licence with 23,000 hours but only 90 on the Spitfire. He had failed to switch back from the fuselage tank (used for take off and landing only) to the wing tanks during a previous flight and drained it. Consequently when he prepared for landing and switched from the wing tanks to the fuselage it suffered from an air lock and fuel starvation. Fortunately there is private airfield close to Sywell at Pitsford which he was able to attempt an emergency landing. Unfortunately he landed too far down the strip and ran into the hedge damaging the nose and one wing.
As an aside Sywell airport has a small hotel and pub garden and is a great place to take the Cobra to enjoy a pint whilst watching the Ultimate Warbirds collection (Spitfire, Mustang, Thunderbolt and Me109) at close quarters take off and land.

It's not the 90 hrs, in type that got him, it's the 23,000 arrogant hours that got him! At the height of BOB, pilots had as little as five hours in the Spit, and they didn't do such a rookie mistake! Cheers, Dennis

Agree. In a modern jet liner there would be all sorts of audible and visual warnings to prevent this sort of thing happening. In the Spit to get a reading from the fuselage tank a button has to be pressed (which wasnt). It can’t give a live reading all the time because it burns the filament out apparently. It might be unfair criticism but had he landed not so far down the grass strip he wouldn’t have damaged the plane by going into the hedge. Main thing though was that the pilot and passenger weren’t injured.

Yep. Spits, like cobras and ford gts, have no nannies. You have to know how to fly or drive
