I have logged into CHR a few times and never had a problem but I don't go there enough to really know if they have the same problems. I am pretty sure they are on the same server.

Start by wiggling wires, if that doesn't work bang on the side of the box, if that doesn't work resort to sprinkling pixie dust on the machine. Always works for me.

Just want to offer a big “thank you” and pats on the back for all who are making the effort to keep this site going, and especially Brett for creating and nurturing it for so long. I’ve often referenced the site to clients as a great example of the value that an online community can create and provide. Glad that you and Brent (EM-0785) are looking into ways to keep this site and its history alive and well.

As many have said, Club Cobra is a tremendous resource and repository of Cobra knowledge, particularly for those of us with kit cars / tribute cars / replicas / continuation cars ... whatever one wants to call them.

I received a lot of help from a great number of members here when I was researching and building my car, made some wonderful friends along the way.

Not as many builds going on as there used to be, but as the older Cobra enthusiasts age out of the hobby, this site and others like it, will be of great value to those younger Cobra enthusiasts, that follow in our footsteps.

Alright, you're nine days in to the job. It's amazing that I even got through to post this message. I actually clicked on the link, got tired of waiting, went and made a sandwich, and when I came back it had somehow gotten through. What you might consider is having a seconed site that is read only and allows fast searching of the database and that does not produce horrific time delays and errors. No posting, just searches. That would at least preserve the data.

It may come to that. It depends on whether the database itself is actually corrupt (there is no other explanation for some of the things that happen), whether or not it can be repaired, and how much it would cost to do so (likely an open-ended purchase order with someone who gets paid the same as lawyers. I actually got more.)

If Club Hotrod isn't having these problems then it would tend to point more to the database for this site. However Bill mentioned something in another post that you might consider too. This is Bill's post. ( I believe a lot of the problems with server resources have to do with a coding error on another sister site much larger, but offline for months due to this issue) club chopper. )

Correct, as explained to me, the issue that is affecting the shared server has to do with some coding errors involving clubchopper.com, which was actually taken offline quite some time ago. Unfortunately, it does not appear that doing so fixed the issues with the rest of Brent's forums (there were two or three others at one time, a fiat related site, and a photography related site).

The real question Bill is why has it taken this long to even have the problem acknowledged publicly? I remember the forum crash of 2016 Site is back, but lost some days....and.... and the follow up crash of 2019. There were problems before that but it's really never been the same since 2019. You can go on the ALL COBRA TALK index and track that crash and see thread Replies would always be one less than thread Views from that point forward. And, of course, those simple tracking values are still broken to this day. But that's minor compared to the other problems. You have done an admirable job defending the owner over the years and it seems he's always either travelling or going through some sort of nebulous "personal issues." But the bottom line is that we're ten years into this failure and the only glimmer is that we might have fresh eyes looking at the problem now. Perhaps if we had sought professional help ten years ago we wouldn't be on the verge of throwing this entire site into rehab now.

If multiple forums share the same database engine (although they may have separate databases) then it could very well be a "coding error" in the database, but the database engine that the forums most likely use MySQL as the actual data base engine and it's been stable for years. I would doubt that the forum owner would sign on to a "beta" of MySQL that could be buggy. There is probably a shim between the forum software and the actual data base engine that COULD be buggy, but in any case the issues that cause the instability are most likely written into the database (Garbage In Garbage Out). But if there is an identifiable piece of software that was updated at the time this all started, fixing it might not fix the damage done to the database itself.

In many cases it takes a full rebuild of the database, ie, an object oriented copy that mimics "post" activity and in the process rebuilds the tables. It's a function that is probably not provided by the software vendor and would be very expensive to create. On the other hand it IS possible that a different forum software vendor might have a utility that would convert the vbulletin database to their database format. So switching software might be the only way to actually fix the problem by converting it to a new databasae.

Whatever, you need a really basic and very technical understanding of what is broken and simply dumping a huge database file and server onto the laps of a new "owner" isn't going to give that without some expense...

I’m real low tech. When something acts up I just pull the plug for a few minutes and then plug it back in. Surprising how many times that works although my HP Printer always chastises me for doing so without following normal shut down procedures.
