ERA
I'll have to keep you posted on how it works out, but ERA made me an undercar exhaust that goes over the outboard brakes.

Chuck, What is the OD of the pipe going around the IRS, were they able to go bigger than 2"? Do you have headers or 390 type iron manifold? If headers, how about a picture .
Thanks

I was taking one as you typed!
The OD of the pipe is 2" - dumb question is that what you measure? ID is 1.88". Primaries are surprisingly big too, their OD is 1.95".

Chuck nice headers, Thanks
Now that you have the pattern, how about 3x2 oval pipe system. They make a 3" round to 3x2 oval transition, improve your backpresure.

Chuck,
About a month ago, I purchased the same set as you from ERA. I had mine go straight thru to the back of the car. Hope you have a good exhaust person to set these up..It took mine awhile..Also the angle on the primaries may have to be modified to set up correctly under the car. One thing I'm concerned about is there were no flanges that lined up on the headers and the primaries.
There is nothing to lock them together or prevent them from coming loose. I have exhaust leaks on mine already after driving it a very short distance and will end up taking it back to the shop to have this problem dealt with.
I think this could have been avoided with flanges on both sides when they were manufactured or have a lock down mechanism in place to prevent them from coming apart.
I would be interested in hearing of your experience with this exhaust set up.
Good luck,
Don

Did any of the originals exit in front of the rear wheels?
It sure would make things alot easier.

I believe all original street cars exited the rear. I am committing sacrilege but original street cars with 428’s did not put out 500hp.

There is an old R&T article by Tony Hogg about his narrow hipped street car (original 2X4 427 SO) His had the undercar exhaust that was in poor condition when he bought it and he talks about have a muffler shop set him up with glass packs and the exit was in front of the rear wheels.
I'd really like to do this set up too, but I worry more ground clearance than performance, since I neither need, nor will have 500hp (might as well live to see 40 )

427r
maricopa,
I will try to find vintage pics of the "NOT SILVER CAR" CSX3173 [that was actually red] that has the side exhaust in front of the rear wheels, and scan it for you.

Hey Grumpy, I've been trying to contact you about those FFR compatible FIA bodies you mentioned at FFCobra. Do you have a site, catalog, pics?
BTW, I have the article I mentioned in a neat R&T compilation of all the road tests they did on Cobras, Shelbys and GT-40s so I don't need that scan, but thanks.

Mike, I do not have 500hp either, nor do I want it. So there were street cars that did have rear tire exit, wonderful. I am told that the car will have to be 2" above SC height to have proper clearence, what do you figure? Also what are you using to keep from getting a hot seat? Are you insulating inside or above the muffler outside. Using bullet glasspack or muffler?
Thanks
Gary

The 428's of yore were box stock Police Interceptor motors. They were factory rated at 335 HP, 480 FPTQ. CR was around 10.5:1 ane burned Hi Test.

Weekend, I'm just at the point of ordering my FFR so I have no specifics yet. I just know I want something 'different' without going totally out of the vintage spectrum. So it's either a street 427 with no roll bar (removable actually) and undercar exhaust, or maybe a FIA body if I can get ahold of Grumpy and check out that option.
The hot seat problem is a big consideration, it's bad enough to be 5" off the 160º AZ pavement, with a mufler under there I'm sure I'll have to add something.
Mike
