Rollbar mounted camcorders....What mount is the best?

Hey, thinking of getting a rollbar camcorder mount, but which one to get? Fred Hamilton showed me his last weekend, and it's nice, but his relative got it for him on the net somewhere.

Which one did you choose and why? Post pics if you got'em.

I have a Sony digital 8 that I use with an IO Port mount on the roll bar. It's a little larger than the newest stuff, but has higher resolution than many of the smaller cameras and great stabilization. I run a remote mic ($25 from Radio Shack - it's a lapel mike with an internal watch battery) under the passenger seat to get rid of the wind noise. I also use two tie down straps to make sure the camera stays steady, which helps the picture. It was uploaded in very low res, but you can get a feel for the stabilization and sound quality.

No simple answer, the urathane mount has good vibration resistance but harmonic shake with some cameras. Fixed mount will work with some cameras with stablization, but vibrate like crazy with others.

Hey all, any updates on good Camcorder mounts for Cobra rollbars? Anything Billet, clean looking maybe?

I did some checking around on the web for these links and old threads... Found a possibility from the Miata forums, but no real good pictures to see what you get for brackets, swivel features, etc... People also mention something about taking one device for an IO port and combining it with a secondary device to make something up?. Not sure what that is about yet...

I was hoping I could just buy something this time (not going off on a tangent) rather than making it into another hand-made CNC type project - like everything else as it seems. argh.

If you know of a good Cobra camcorder-to-rollbar mount setup, I'd appreciate your response. Thanks.

I did this for @$65 bucks, check out the thread I posted a couple months back. No sense reinventing the wheel, this contraption works very well.

Brent I have an IOport mount on my roll bar that works very well. I think they make a sustion cup mount that will mount on the body of the car without marking it and hold a cam corder. Most of the guys at R&G have them mounted to the roll bar with duct tape to protect the finish on the bar. Add a couple of bunge cords around the camera and mount. If you mount on the bar, get a piesce of foam to put between the bar and camera, it help on the vibrations from the car. Rick Lake ps You are doing a great job with the CC site.

There is a race supply store in Redmond, WA that was at the Portland Historic races the past weekend. Since they are mailing me my receipt I can not give you their name at the moment. They sell a mount for $99. I have not had a chance to try it out. It uses a clamp for the roll bar. I can email you a photo if you are interested.

I thought it might be fun to have for the Whistler run.

I was in a boring meeting all day and could only think how i could set up a camera on the roll bar.

There was a guy at DVSF II from Michigan who was a ski boat dealer and he said that a camera mount on a ski boat ( it mounts on the towing bar of the boat) would probably work well on a roll bar. He said the mount dampened the vibrations of the boat by using two pieces of braided steel cable in a looped design. When I got home from the fling, I searched on the net for the design he talked about ,but, with no luck. If anyone knows any ski boat dealers or outlets, maybe they could find the design and post some pics.

Do you mean something like this?

This is made for water skiing, so the "hook" in front of the camera will follow the direction of the tow rope.

That is not the design that I was referring to. The camera itself sat on top of two braided wire loops. These loops absorbed the shock and vibration. Hard to explain without pictures. But the guy from Mich. said that that design really absorbed the vibration and pounding of a ski boat.

The ISO is no longer produced, but they have some in stock.
You can buy direct from them, price they quoted was $139.

I spoke with Brian. He advised to look at their newer product, the P3 mount.

I like it, clean and simple. How stable is it, does it move around a bit?

I've read a few guys put some sort of extra support to keep them from flopping around, even on the small cameras. I may end up making one too...

My camera mount is absolutely stable. It does not move around at all. I am using a high quality Bogan brand ball head which I highly recommend.

I do think the camera used is critical. I had a heavier 'Handycam" which has its weight distributed on a horizontal plane causing leverage on the mount. Airplane guys call it "moment". It's the distance from the CG or leverage point in addition to the the weight which is important.

The camera I now use is not only very light weight but the weight is centered directly above the mount which results in a very stable system.

this is the camera I use. It is a little bigger than a cigarette box.
