Ernie:

That was the all time (regardless of class) closed course record. It was a one of a kind car that was built on a March indy car chassis.

Oh yeah, the "Quad Four", I remember that engine. It was supposed to be the American answer to the Japanese 4 bangers. Not only Olds but I think it was destined to become the "GM" wonder motor. Didn't they run that same engine at Indy 500 also? And whatever happened to the motor, don't hear much about it anymore.

Was reading an interesting thread over on the American LeMans Series site.

The highest speed achieved by any car during an actual race (vs. practice/qualifying) was by the Group C WM Peugeot in 1988 at LeMans - 252 mph on the Mulsanne Straight (before it's 4-mile length was neutered by the chicanes in 1990). The Peugeot made ~900 hp, had 1100 lbs. of downforce and 890 lbs. of drag at 250 mph., with a cd of .26.

The previous record was set in 1971 by a Gulf/Porsche 917 Lange-Heck (long-tail) at 246 mph, again on the Mulsanne. The Porsche had ~600 hp, and 250 lbs. downforce and 700 lbs. drag at 240.

Don't have much to do with Cobra speeds, but interesting, anyway.

Jeff, thanks for the detail. I'm kind of hazy on why the Champ car guys would be claiming the speed record when the Aerotech had it beaten by a bunch of mph. I was not under the impression that there were any classes, just "run what you brung", if you know what I mean. Maybe the Champ car record is the "world closed-course speed record" for open-wheelers. Hell, who knows.

Crank, I wasn't equating the closed-course stuff to the 198 figure. They are two different animals, as one is a maximum mph number and the other an average. I was just throwing in what (little) I know about the closed-course record, in response to somebody's inquiry earlier in this thread.

Trans Am Jim:

Your response was completely on target. The original question WAS the highest speed in a race and did not specify Cobras. You know were ALL speed freaks, ha ha.

Is Lemans considered a "closed course" you think? I bet not. With the changes made at Lemans the speed records set before are unlikely to ever be broken. I understand a Cobra holds the "lap" record at a track in Europe because the track was changed AFTER the Cobra did it. The record still holds today (ha ha, one for our side).

Actually--the original question did specify Cobras, but this is good stuff too!

A very entertaining thread!

I'm still more impressed with CSX 2287 at Bonneville:

23 international USAC/FIA records including a 12-hour average of 150-mph, which included the time lost by re-fueling with a crank hand pump and also the loss of fourth gear late in the day.

Also a record 3-hour average of 160.92 mph....talk about dependability!

Hi Guys My turn. Robert Evans, Dick said hi. Grapes are in, cold is better. Said he would look at this wonderful post, I am sure he is laughing his #ss off. I was told 2 things 1 He is going to fax me a copy of his speed record, He has only one copy. Unoffcially Ken miles was the fastest cobra roadster at over 200 mph. Dick had 3.31 gears 27.5 tires front end dropped 2 inches and a motor that turned 8200 rpm's. Roy Willey and Gene Bulter Built the motor. Joe Pogas put the engine together. The cobra was not a lite weight. Car and driver weight 2850 lbs. I myself had trouble with this record and Dick Smith being a wonderful person and driver told me about this record and how hard it was to get. I hope this helps all of the lack of facts on this matter. Rick Lake

Hi Rick,
Thanks for recofirming Jamo's post. Suppose this sends some of our engineers on this site back to their drawing boards??? Hope so.

Can you post some pictures of your car and it's engine installation.

God Bless America,

I suppose everyone feels better after all of this. Too bad this thread got off to a bad start by someone posting an attack on one person while relying on another's name. Then, after realizing how assinine that looked, that same person goes back and erases his posts. Now he's crying to the administrator that he was "picked on" in this thread, and that Remington's name was demeaned.

What an unmitigated a$$hole.

Raisin are good for you and bad for the growers.... no money in grapes this year. huge problem,
wine lake, raisins are left over from last year's crop still in warehouses. Solution= drink more
wine and eat raisins!

Most likely Sunmaid or Champion. Getting shelf space on the grocery store shelves is next to
impossible for most companies. That is one of the raisin companies problems, if they were
taken over by Nestle of Kraft it would not surprice me to see raisin taking off.

Bony

Using your descriptions of the individual in question takes it to a level I didn't intend. I also appeared to have been lumped with some of your earlier posts about Remington, which was quite unsettling since I never attacked the gentleman--nor would I.

Just don't want to be incorrectly associated with your comments--I write for myself; I am responsible only for my own words.

BTW--you're a raisin expert now?

ok, nobody ever insinuated that you were a puppet. heard someone suggest that you were shy and retreating once, can't recall exactly who, maybe it was in my dreams? i elected to edit that post, don't want to get the dominant Fresno ethnic group upset. regarding raisin, you bet, there were years when they went down it meant less winery grapes for low end production, today it
doesn't make any difference, you can't make money with either while gallo pays $75/ton for grapes.

Jamo,

Who is name calling now???? I hold this gent in high regard. I believe the first shot was fired by someone else in regards to Remington being a disgruntled employee of Shelby.

For folks that have come to know Remington and what he has accomplished, that is insulting to them, much in the same way you feel about Dick Smith.

So why don't you drop it and move on.
