I agree--it should've been dropped long before--too bad he keeps bringing it up behind the scenes after pulling his stuff off the thread. Totally disagree about the first shot, bud--that was on the second post attacking the veracity of Smith, whom I hold in high regard (which conveniently can't be read anymore).

Just tell him to stop playing games--pulling posts off, etc. cleaning his laundry--and then complaining about being picked on.

I thought this was done a long time ago (in internet time). Unlike your friend, whom I also used to enjoy reading, I don't go behind the scenes--my comments are right here.

Done in a behind the scenes fashion in a way that would've prevented response normally--reinventented what went on online. Consistent with erasing posts.

But you know what buddy? You're right--ain't doing nobody any good to keep talking about somebody else's unsavory (IMHFO) actions in this whole thing. Out of my respect for you, I'm not gonna say another word unless prompted to by continued action by someone else.

You're a good man, Charley Brown...er...Johnny.

I hear ya, but I think we've all been doing a lot of this lately (myself included - i.e. - I'm not no saint).

Lots of misunderstandings and disagreements. We must be going through that post summer blues thing.

I dunno....

Jamo, Not fair dissing someone who has the passion and Cobra knowledge that most of us will never have. He does not engage in the back and forth trashing that the Gasholes and Crankoids seem to like.

Weather Smith went 198 doesn't really matter it is just that when sombody doubts the so called superioty of the BB ford all the BB guys come out of the woodwork to defend their coice of engine. 30 + years later and most of the guys around here except a few have absolutley no knowledge of what went on back then. They read sombody's biased opions and take them as Gospel. Others with more knowledge also give their opinions and these are the guys I tend to beleive.

You and I have agreed to disagree on the 198 and we can leave it at that. But others with more inside info should not be called names because they differ.

Thanks,

RD

Bony,
Being a spectator at an event is hardly being an insider.
I guess all my trips to Nascar races makes me privvy to garage info. I don't think so.

I respectfully disagree with your comments and leave it at that.

wasn't a spectator, part of a crew, but that's fine...
it's ok to trash a legend's record in some 'small' minded people's mind.
shame on all of you for doing so.
have a nice day and better cook out!

Bony
Don't need you on this--that's not what this is about.

Roger
My recent post was a reaction to something. As a fellow reactionary, I read your words as indicating an understanding of the difficulty in not reacting when a reaction might be reasonably expected...er...anyway, something like that. My comments had nothing to do with disagreemnts about whether something happened--had to do with comments made and perceived tactics used since then.

That being said, I hereby retract my comment that Bob Evans is an "unmitigated a$$hole". There is indeed some mitigation.

For example, Bob commendably went through the trouble of re-editing his posts that he removed several days ago by putting back in yesterday what he originally said.

As I have said several times in my posts, I respect and have enjoyed his discussions of our interest's history. I have further made it quite clear that I respect, in fact cherish, Mr. Remington--never once did I attack him--on this thread or any other. Finally--I also made it clear in my posts that this isn't a BB vs. SB thing with me--you and I both agreed early on that that was never the issue (at least the way we saw it).

Where I took issue with Bob--again made quite clear by my posts--was his attack upon the veracity of Mr. Smith in the second post to this thread (unfortunately removed for a period of time and which has now been re-edited to include a cleaned up version of the original comments) which brought up the names of Remington and Smith. Now--I do not sit here and defend or promote Dick Smith or anyone else, nor do I attack Remington or anyone else. I don't think any of us--you, me, Bob or anyone else has the right or the ability to do so. To do so is no better than a leach upon someone else's life and accomplishments--we're all guilty of it.

Moving forward--I hope Bob decides to stay here and post--that is entirely his decision. It may be that he didn't realize someone knew Dick Smith (course, that shouldn't matter) or had as strong a feeling about history as he might. I don't profess to know everything about our interest's history, and I tend to challange those who may appear to present themselves as if they do--especially when it strikes home, as it did here where I happen to know the person being attacked.

Simply read my posts--as I've said several times here, I write on behalf of myself and no other--and I'll be damned if I'll accept grief about what someone else writes.

Now--I like to be open about everything. Bob and I have been requested to bury the hatchet, post our final comments on this subject and move forward for the good of this site. I am quite willing to do so, and I look forward to reading Bob's posts in the future and conversing with him if he is tall enough to do so.

Roger and Johnny--folks are lucky if they can count you as friends.

P.S. to Bob--a "mitigated a$$hole" is a Gashole compliment. Thought I'd better explain that.

Well, after this thread started up again yesterday, I spoke to Bob and since the main bone of contention yesterday was that he took the info out of his post...I suggested he put it back in, which obviously he did. Now, thats not good enough.

Again, this was an ok thread questioning the validity of this run until the name calling started. Thats where it went sour. Regardless of who said what.

Did realize this was your private thread. Sorry to step on your real estate,
forgive me, ok buddy?? Also for the record for anyone else
interested, I never said one negative word about Mr. Remington and none
of my posts are edited. Takes to much time and I don't know how to spell
anyway.

I guess all the NHRA records of the 50's,60's,70's should be discounted
as the technology could be considered suspect??

Since Bony saw my post & responded after I rethought things and decided 'not to go there', I'll put it back in.

I had originally questioned Bony's age being in the pits in 1967 for D. Smiths run.

...I'm going to have to cut your leg off and count the rings (like a tree) just to be sure you ain't fibbing.

I still want whatever you're drinking...55?

Good advice about putting them back on. Shouldn't have been taken off in my opinion. Some editing of my post is a tip of the hat to you.

Back again. PDHse The info a was told about on Ken Miles was from Dick. I would try to find out by finding the engineers at this time. I do not know who is still alive at this event to verify the speed. Dan Gurney, Bob Bondurant, Ed Leslie,Lew Spencer,Al Dowd, or Phil Remmington May know more. Bonyhadi I don't have a camera that can put pictures of my car on the internet yet. maybe Santa will bring one for Christmas. NOW what happened to the GIRL!!! RacerX#99 We both live in N.J. I think the water you are drinking is unsafe. Dick Smiths record is FACT and COBRA HISTORY and to me it does matter. I know you have not talked to the man, ( Dick Smith ) because if you did you might have a different opinion about what was done. Talk to Robert Evans, maybe he can help. To Brent Mills Everybody has gotten in their 2 cents, THIS POST SHOULD BE NOW CLOSED............. Rick Lake

Default Cobra speed record?

I posted this about a year ago on another subject, but I will tell my tale again here.

When I first built my LAE in '94 I attended several local car shows.

I don't remember if it was in '95 or '96, but I went to a show in Cayucos, a small costal town in California about 7 miles north of Morro Bay.

After I got parked and all polished up, another Cobra made itself known to the crowd and parked beside mine. As it worked out it was Dick Smith in the infamous #198. Dick was good friends with the organizer of the event and visits it on accation to support his friend.

We talked about several things during the course of the show but one of the things I remember most was that Dick said that he didn't believe that the timing equipment, or possibly the operators, that gave him the 198 record speed was accurate.

As with all of those that do great and wonderful things, and like to have something to talk about, he didn't say anything to the timing crew thinking they would discover the error and make the necessary adjustments.

There is always the possibity that the recording equipment was correct, but if the driver thinks it in a streatch, it probably is.

There are few drivers more in tune with their car that Dick Smith. He held the Pikes Peak hill climb for several years, one time it got taken away from him he went out the same day and reclaimed the record.

He knows what his car will do and he knows what he can do with it. If he questions the 198 speed, then I tend to believe him.

That is possibly one of the first controversial world class happenings that took place in Florida.

Interesting comment after so many pages, and after several of us have spoken recently to Dick in detail about this and related those conversations here several pages back.
